Hey Anton, if that black hole is 12 billion light years away that means we are seeing it that far in the past, cause the light takes it that long to get here. So shouldn't it be a lot bigger, or destroyed by now. I know we can't really predict that but it's fun to think about.
@Sam-oz8pn

Black holes can't be destroyed. It could have merged, getting even bigger. It would also lose mass through Hawking radiation, but for large black holes, that's negligible

Most likely. There are lots of stars out there, so there have to be bigger ones. I actually think that UY Scuti is reaching the limit of size. Not sure if astronomers agree, but here's why: at UY Scuti's point, it's almost a nebula with a fusing core in the middle. The gas is so thin you can't even notice it. If you insist that's a star, there's another barrier: the core only fuses for so long before collapsing, so it can only push gas out for so long until it stops.

Can a gas moon exist? A planetary satellite composed like Jupiter orbiting a larger planet?
@wyattshepard5676
7 жыл бұрын
Roberto Santiago Probably not. Any gases that could be retained by a moon would likely be stripped away by the gravitational pull of whatever planet the moon is orbiting.
@Sam-oz8pn
7 жыл бұрын
Such a moon couldn't hold itself together unless it was very massive. At that point it would be very large, forming either a binary system or getting torn apart by tidal forces (Roche limit). Not to mention the solar wind. It also couldn't really form, as the current models for gas giant creation (even non core accretion) don't really allow for this. However, it's an interesting concept. Since the moon gets denser the lower you go, there could be optimal "city levels" or something where we could put stuff that floats. However, if you dropped something denser, it would fall down out of reach. That would be pretty cool!

@Sam-oz8pn
7 жыл бұрын
No, it's not possible. The closest you can get is our sun. The reason is the way stars glow: the blackbody spectrum. Check it out, it's interesting. If you want green stars, the emissions have to peak in the green. The issue here is that when blackbody emissions peak in green, they let out a lot of the other colours, and all those colours together make white. The extra green isn't enough to turn the star green. It's different with orange, yellow, and blue stars because with those stars their colour has a clear majority. Orange stars have a lot more red and some yellow, making them orange. Yellow stars have a lot of everything except for blue, making them yellow. Blue stars are the opposite; they emit lots of blue light but less of everything else.
