I'll be doing the same thing when I visit Kos in September. Did you hire a bike?

I hired a bike as it is too much of hassle to have my own transported to Kos. And as riding MTB there is riding gravel roads rather than singletrack, requirements for a bike is much less than here at home (in Finland). The town has bike rentals in every block, but it is difficult to find anything decent MTB style. There seems to be one shop close to Marina that had good looking Scotts on display. I ended up riding basic level 29" Scott hardtail. Citybikes are 5€/d. Scott HT was 7€/d. No big money. connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/545706500 Film was recorded from this ride

There are companies providing MTB tours of 3-4 hours in length. Cost ranges from €30-50. I am a regular road cyclist in the UK, so do you think I could plan my own route and save some money?

***** This was the only company I found pre-trip kosbikeactivities.com/ As long as those narrow gravel roads are enough, you can do the trip by your own. Just try to keep high on mountains and follow paths available. I spotted sprayed red "MTB" arrows on roads and rocks that seems to guide to suitable routes. Thus it was no problem to navigate. I think that benefit of participating organized trips is that you don't need to wonder which route to take and you have friends around. But you also need to follow their pace - is it too slow or too fast, but anyhow others will set the pace.

Get a Helix folding bike. Big wheels and fits into a large suitcase .
