This is AMAZING. I love that this performance is the live recording for the first album and where that iconic picture of Tobi and Kathleen sitting on the stage came from. Thanks for posting!

Does anyone know where this review (the one Molly Neuman is reading) is from? Like who wrote it/who published it? Especially if there is a link to the whole review... "Okay, Bikini Kill. Their supposed message of Bikini Kill's music and literature is girls-only feminism...."

i believe there is an old magazine interview where they talk about this...dont quote me, but if i remember correctly the article came from some honolulu paper? I remember when pussy whipped came out and that was the first time i heard bikini kill. loved them ever since. this is about all i could dig up which is just a supposed transcript of the article www.angelfire.com/indie/honolulu/thurston.html

Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth wrote the article after seeing them perform in Hawaii. Bikini Kill was getting very popular on the East coast at the time as they hailed from DC and Thurston caught wind of the excitement they were generating and figured it wasn't anything until he gave his opinion on the whole thing ( jerk-off ). Also at the time, Thurston and Kim Gordon ( his once long-time wife ) would attend alternative and punk rock shows in their spare time and if they attended your show, it was, in the majority's mind, a mark of acceptance or a stamp of approval from the alternative and punk rock community. Sonic Youth had been around a long time at this point and they were pioneers of the alternative/punk rock scene of the 80s and 90s so the community valued their opinion above all others. So, after seeing Bikini Kill perform, Thurston Moore wrote this scathing, misinformed, ignorant and offensive review of the band and without naming her, a seemingly specific attack on Kathy. B.K. Took this in stride and with the help of Bratmobile, they created ' Thurston hearts The Who ', a reference to his idea of what a solid punk band is. By taking his own words and transforming them into the lyrics of the song, they took ownership of them and redefined them as the words of a clueless, chauvinistic a-hole that tried to take a serious jab at a ground-breaking band he knew nothing about at the time. He later said he regretting writing the article as he was now a fan of Bikini Kill. Whatever...

Anarcho-socialism requires no strong central system. It is based upon syndics -- voluntary associations that gather together to create and own the means of production. So there's nothing contradictory between left-wing and counter-culture, as long as you choose your left-wing philosophy correctly (one of the anarchist branches like anarcho-socialism is typical for punk rockers).

Thurston is Thurston Moore, the singer of Sonic Youth (Kathleen Hanna would later perform in the video to 'Bull in the heather' by SY). The Who is obviously the band. I think Bikini Kill just wanted to adress the fact that people want to be cool by association (without having an opinion of their own).

Tobi Vail (red dress and glasses) is singing, Molly Neuman (of Bratmobile) is reading the review, Kathleen switches drums with Tobi in the second half of the song to perform the screaming part ('woa-ooah') together with Erika Reinstein and Mary Fondriest (who were both standing in front of the stage) doing the heavy but somehow muffled screaming.

This is one band I just could never get into. Props to those who "get it" with Bikini Kill; their appeal just simply beyond/beneath me. I've listened to quite a lot of different kinds of music, but with BK, they really don't even stack up to the local bands I supported when I was in HS/college.

@knucklegrrrl562 The entire "punk rock" ethos is self-contradictory. Most fans just gloss over it and pretend not to notice it, but it is there. SLC Punk alluded to it. you can't be counter-culture AND be left-wing, as socialism, communism, and fascism all require a strong central system. Punk culture IS a system, riot grrl IS a gender role. I like punk music, and I even like BK's music (even though I'm white, hetero, male, and American) but hypocrisy really is punk's elephant in the room.

I like this band, however, I hope that I can like them while still believing that their political views re abortion, as expressed in this video, are pretty wrong-headed.
