Yes we all know this. This what will Belichick does when speaking about other teams right before playing them. He singles out the best players and heaps on praise on them. I was fortunate enough to watch Lawrance Taylor play for my favorite team. I managed to watch probably 96 percent of the snaps he played over his career. Every player has a highlight real that shows their best plays. Some players were lucky enough to have 16-18 highlights in a single season. Lawrance Taylor would regularly make 8-10 explosive game-changing plays in a game. We mostly see him sacking quarterbacks on his highlight reels but, he regularly beat running backs senseless and was constantly deep down the field in coverage on pass plays. Oh and he had 9 interceptions and one was a 98-yard pick 6 in a Thanksgiving day game against the Detroit Lions. This specific episode of Undisputed brought back some great memories.

Lawrence Taylor, was actually about 6'3" 250lbs (though they listed him at 243-245 lbs). Agree. Shannon Sharpe's points are good ones to support this. He created or elevated the importance of positions in the NFL. You had to have a good left tackle. The H Back was important to help assist block Taylor. The concept of an edge rusher was created by Taylor. All this while Taylor played in a league that was centered on good defense and running. If Taylor played in a pass happy league like today he would have twice as many chances to rush the QB and a lot more sacks. If Brady or the other 'great' QBs today had to face off against Taylor I am sure they wouldn't be quite the players they are now.

Why does everyone assume Bill meant JJ is better or even as good at LT was? I think he meant that he has been one of the most dominant defensive players of late, and you have to gameplan for him every time you face him just like LT. It's like comparing Lebron to MJ: Lebron is an all time great, but comparing his greatness to MJ in terms of game-planning for their dominance doesn't mean he's better than MJ.

I have seen both play. I have very little doubt it is LT. If there were intentional grounding penalty for QBs and less rushing attempts by teams which limits the number of passing attempts by the opposing teams, LT will have far more Sacks than what he ended up with which is still remarkably high. If LT played in this current pass first era, he will probably total 20 or more sacks every single season and his best single season sack total might top 30 sacks. Also, I don't believe they kept track of Tackles for loss back then. This stat will probably shed even more light on the matter. He simply wrecked offenses.

If you are not in your 40s, you are not qualified to accurately make this comparison. JJ Watt, when healthy, is the best defensive player today...plain and simple!!! LT was a whole different animal!!! Offenses during his era had no clue what to do with him...the game plan literally became to run their plays away from LT the best they could. He dictated offenses to play defensively because he was freakishly unblockable from anywhere on the line. Every dominant ILB, OLB, MLB, and DE you can think of (including JJ Watt) has patterned themselves after LT whether directly or indirectly...defensively, the GOAT!!!

Captain Marvel..............Watch the tape. Particularly games against the Redskins so you can see Lawrence Taylor at 240lbs toss 330lb Joe Jacoby to the ground like a rag doll on his way to sacking the quarterback. Watch the tape of the 1988 'Pain Game' vs the New Orleans Saints where Lawrence Taylor had a torn pectoral muscle but managed to get 3 sacks and a 2 forced fumbles to help the Giants win 13-10. JJ Watt is a great player but Lawrence Taylor was born 'standing up'. The tendency in the NFL is to elect worthy football players into the Hall Of Fame, after being retired for 5 years, in their first year of eligibility. When Lawrence Taylor retired they should have given him his yellow jacket the minute he submitted his retirement papers.

Captain Marvel JJ also gets the privilege of picking and choosing the spot he wants to be in making it easier to disrupt the play because the offense can't predict where he's coming from

So glad Shannon mentioned the era. How the game is different both due to the rules and how it effected the style of play. Normally he doesnt. He certainly doesn't when talking about the NBA. Also I don't believe Bill said JJ Watt was better than LT. He's comparing a current GREAT defensive player against possibly the greatest defensive player ever. That's all. Must be a slow news day....but then again this is typical of the media.

Watt currently one of my favorite players but LT is my favorite player of all time but, it is ZERO Comparison! Von Miller though, YES Von Miller is probably the closest I'm see to LT since Derrick Thomas (RIP). Von Miller also does it in Big Games/Post Season like LT and put the Broncos on his Back and Carried them to a Super Bowl like LT did TWICE! Khalil Mack is coming though he is next up in that conversation as far as comparing and having the impact of LT

Miller can't stop the run he is not even close to LT! Mack is a MONSTER you can't run at him and if the Raiders could cover someone Mack would average 25 sacks a season! Miller is a great pass rusher but a one trick pony!

Watt is better than miller and way better than mack. The only reason you say von miller instead of watt is because he plays on the broncos, one of the best teams in the nfl. Watt didnt have a chance to get anywhere near the superbowl with those players on his team. Meanwhile denver has probowlers everywhere

I saw a game between the giants and the 49ers where the 49ers ran a misdirection where the fullback went left and even I thought he had the ball but it was handed off to Roger Craig who went right with a pulling guard and tackle to block. LT went up the middle and then left before realizing he’d been had. I swear to god he turned and ran all the way across the field and grabbed Roger Craig by the jersey and slung him to the ground before he got five yards. Even all these years later I still think it’s the greatest play I ever saw a linebacker make, and I still have trouble believing it. I mean watching LT was like watching a whole different level of defense. He never quit till the ball carrier was down. Most players in that situation would have rightfully just quit the pursuit considering themselves out of the play but not LT. He never quit and never thought he was out of a play. Because he was free to move up and down the line, or drop back into coverage you could literally feel the fear in linemen. He’d wait till the offense was almost set then move to the other side of the field or to the middle if he was going to blitz and you could just see the confusion and agitation in the line and especially the quarterback. I don’t know if he’s the greatest football player of all time, but he’s certainly the goat of defensive players. He’s also the only player who literally changed the game of football just by being the player he was.

How many perennial All-Pros did Lawrence Taylor play with? Harry Carson was a stud, 2x First Team All-Pro. Carl Banks was a good player, 1x First Team All-Pro. Pepper Johnson was a good addition in 1986, 1x First Team All-Pro. But LT was DPOY his FIRST TWO YEARS in the NFL. LT was also League MVP for the 1986 season. Don't use Pro Bowl appearances as a barometer......its basically a popularity contest. Watt has plenty of help on the defensive side of the ball: Whitney Merciless Jadeveon Clowney Brian Cushing

There is a REASON that, even more than Tyson himself in "Mike Tyson's Punchout" (who *is* actually beatable, it's just next to impossible unless you know the secrets), that Lawrence Taylor was made as the greatest videogame character of all-time in "Techmo Bowl", because he is the greatest LB of all-time (this coming from a diehard Patriots fan who grew up loving LT and despises the Giants now). If you were the Giants, you select LT EVERY play, and sack the opposing QB or run down their RB, EVERY play. If SOMEHOW LT doesn't sack you, and you manage to get the pass off, he runs back 30...60...80 yards and makes the interception, then takes it to the house! And it is IMPOSSIBLE to score an extra point, when you score a TD against the Giants, you settle for 6pts, because he blocks every single extra point you attempt.

Two completely different players 6'3" 240 VS 6'5" 290?????. LT was a finesse style pass rusher with bullrush player mentality! JJ Watt is a bullrush type pass rusher with some finesse abilities! Let's be real, the Tackles now are bigger, faster, stronger, and have become more technical in their game on average! Watt deals with 340-pound linemen regularly and Taylor, albeit smaller than Watt played against 290-305 pound linemen! LT was a good 3-4 OLB and Watt could be a DE in 3-4 or 4-3. It's a much different game when comparing a player that is standing at the snap as opposed to one who is usually in a 3-point stance during the snap. Their jobs have similarities, but an OLB is also expected to go into pass coverage at times when a DE does rarely! This is like comparing apples to tomatoes; they are the same color, but taste much different!
