Well, in the minds of many Americans, Europe isn't really apart of the west. In order to be apart of western society, you have to live on the western side of the prime meridian. It's all about perspective.

10 жыл бұрын
Rebecca98463 I've never met someone who doesn't consider Europe part of the west. No one that's serious, anyway. When I say "the west", I mean it in the traditional sense. Europe and it's offshoots. I've never heard the prime meridian interpretation before. Though, I can see how some people can come to that conclusion. The three biggest Empires of post antiquity Europe are Hapsburg Spain, Nineteenth Century France and Victorian Britain, after all. In that chronological order, too. After that, it's all the US.
@Hal2718

Rebecca98463 Well, I would take your response more seriously if you had bothered to read the whole comment. How do you know what I meant? Yeah, a lot of Americans think that the West is the Wild West. Which is only the US and westward. They're technically wrong though. It means everything west of Asia and the Near East. That was my only point. You assumed I was being snarky towards you. I wasn't.

That pc office bullshit tends get way outa hand sometime. I remember this massive shipping warehouse I used to work in had a very diverse crew, but it was all the usual grunt labor; hell about everything race included, and never really took ourselves to seriously, as a result we got along fine. Unfortunately upstairs there was a call center full of the usual clean cut desk warmers who were all about being pc, and playing office politics. And man did they hate us. Come lunch time we would get to bullshitting in the cafeteria, offend some phone jockeys delicate sensibilities, they would file a complaint, and we we would have to attend sensitivity training which no one took seriously. The funny part of that story though is that for all our talk, the ware house grunt valued a person on their work ethic, and all the "offensive" statements in our rather divers bunch were done in good humor, and returned in kind. The office jockeys however were so afraid about offending each other that they would segregate themselves into different groups based solely of race religion and sex, and occasionally you could hear those guys whisper truly racist shit.

lol Like many people mentioned, Bill doesn't seem to be aware of Britain's *god-awful* history in India. They had slaves there until *1920*. That's way past everyone else, by the way. That's the reason so many Indians speak British English. They also left a nice color caste system there. Nice guys.
@lonewolfatdapub
10 жыл бұрын
Not true. Slavery of course was in India before the British arrived and Britain ended slavery in India. The caste system was in India long before the British arrived. Some historians do think that it hardened under the British Raj but even this is controversial. Slavery became illegal in the British empire in 1834. If you want to know how late or early that is compared to other countries you should check the wikipedia Abolishment time-line here's Here's a quote from it ' East India Company becomes increasingly controlled by Britain and abolishes slavery in India by the Indian Slavery Act V. of 1843.' Unfortunately slavery has not ended.
@lonewolfatdapub
10 жыл бұрын
John NoNameGibbon Sure the British did use the caste system to there advantage and they benefited from India greatly more than any other of there colonies. I think they called India the Jewel of the empire. There Idea was not to change the systems in place unnecessarily but take advantage of those systems. I did think what you were referring too was debt bondage or the Indenture system as the date 1920 fit perfectly but this is not slavery don't get me wrong I know in many ways it is very similar but basically as bad as the indenture system was slavery was without doubt worse. "Don't you think it would be in Britain's best interest to try to pretty up their history?" So you think that Wikipedia is British prettied up history... My point is Britain is not the only one writing history about Britain and there involvement with India and vice versa etc. "They're technically the most violent empire in European history. Is this really below them?" Even if I agreed with your first statement here. I don't think it's wise to judge a countries history by reputation as that would be blinding you would just end up believing any history/propaganda that reinforced your prejudice. BTW there were not 1 billion Indians in 1920 or earlier. If I remember rightly India passed one billion citizens in the year 2000. Nuff said, peace
@johnnonamegibbon3580
10 жыл бұрын
lonewolfatdapub It is very much slavery. It was a way to bring slaves out of India. Their caste system only allowed slavery within the society. The caste system never changed, it still remains, so Britain exploited it to the end. However, they also developed a new system that would allow them to import Indians. Have you ever been to British Guyana in South America? It's the poorest country on the continent. A lot of the citizens there are ex-Indian slaves. They happen to fit in with the rest of South America because they look similar to Native Americans from the region. Anyway, my point is that it was just a system that was developed to exploit free labor from India (slavery). Empires do this all the time. We go into third world countries to exploit their terrible working conditions and pay them next to nothing. We call that "trade", but we all know what it really is. And Britain _was_ the most violent Empire in world history, for two simple reasons: One, they preferred to use settler colonies, while Hapsburg Spain (their forefather) used oligarchy to settle lands. Settler colonies slowly wipe out the Native population of whatever land they are placed in. Two, they were a global empire and held global hegemony. There have only been two in that position before the US, them and Spain. And about their population, I'm speaking in proportions. The world's population has ballooned times ten ever since the industrial revolution. So in proportions it was still as big. Actually, I feel that British history is often sugar coated when compared to other empires. Britain has no Black Legend weighing their history down, for example. In fact, their history is often romanticized.
@lonewolfatdapub
10 жыл бұрын
John NoNameGibbon I think you should really read about the Indenture system and perhaps the 1912 Indenture Agreement and then read about slavery and there ( basically zero ) rights. If you can't see a difference between the two, its quite clear, the labour was not free nor for life generally. I personally won't devalue how bad slavery really was by confusing them.
@johnnonamegibbon3580
10 жыл бұрын
lonewolfatdapub We can also risk devaluing human suffering by over-analyzing literal words and over indulging in semantics with the whole thing. It's debt bondage. The keyword being bondage. The mortality rates were also said to have been very high, leading to a labor shortage. In other words, they were slaves that were being worked to death. This isn't really a foreign concept to me, because as an American, I know that we did similar things with African-Americans not too far back. We granted them "freedom" in the mid nineteenth century, but using various different mechanisms (like said laws Britain used) we actually kept slavery going until the early twentieth century. In fact, it _still_ exists in a few other mechanisms in our society. Our judges tend to throw blacks in prison disproportionately for crimes that if committed by a white person, would go excused. Well, it just so happens that once in prison you're required to do free labor (or almost free). So this can be seen as another way of enslaving the black population. I don't deny it, I know it's what we're doing.

The British colonization of India though was a much more peaceful one than the British colonizing North America. The Indians welcomed trade and became close with the brits and adopted much of their democracy but maintained their culture. A lot of Indians are thankful to the brits and sad they left India. Not all colonizations are barbaric, racist or genocidal. A lot of it had to do with allocation of new territory and resources and trading amongst the different cultures with the different commodities the two produced. White European conquest has had its pros and cons on human civilization as has any conquest from any race. Thankyou Bill for adding humour to the mix:)
@nanny7397
5 жыл бұрын
@MC Sample "Not all colonizations are barbaric, racist or genocidal" Yes, they absolutely are. ALL of them. You can't take control of someone else's home, property, money, government, etc. without a fight. Indigenous people don't just allow others to come to their land/country and invade it, there is violence and people die. When Britain invaded India millions of Indians died. They stole from them and starved them. Indians weren't allowed to hold powerful government positions, the Brits took control of that. Britain decided that India should be in WW1, Indians weren't consulted, Britain declared war on India's behalf. When they had enough and tried to protest British rule they were beaten, jailed, and sometimes killed, even the children. There was peaceful trading in the beginning, just like what happened in America with Native Americans. Neither knew their fate at the time. Millions of Indian lives were lost because of the British "colonizing" India. I can't imagine where you got your information but it's completely inaccurate. You're stating it as fact when in reality it couldn't be farther from the truth.

Bill...Bill...Two things: Cromwell, and Queen Elizabeth. You're Irish. You should know your culture's history. We were slaves and we were slaves in America well before Africans: the Scots and Irish made up HALF of the slave trade in this country and were the majority slaves in the British colonies before that; because we were cheap, government controlled goods. Do you know what it took to be a slave back in Victorian England? All you had to be was a child left alone for thirty seconds. That's how brutal the slave trade was. You could be anyone. If they collared you and you were a child, you were a slave. There's an account of a botched abduction in 'We were there, too' a compendium of significant children and minorities in western history. books.google.com/books?id=3lP-CwAAQBAJ&pg=PT55&lpg=PT55&dq=september+11,+1655+cromwell&source=bl&ots=92PX35OkwX&sig=VtEIYJkBH7fLxIy268lCzCYXnvo&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjhtdLrvJ_NAhUG5mMKHX1BCLQQ6AEINzAD#v=onepage&q&f=false www.molonlabemedia.com/2016/04/22/irish-slavery-meme/7/#www.molonlabemedia.com/2016/04/22/irish-slavery-meme/8/ I'm so sick to death with this insufferable white-on-black narrative when it comes to slavery---do people not KNOW what we did to sailors back in the day? We whipped them, repeatedly; with a cat-o-nine-tails when they fucked up. Hell, when they just talked out of turn! This what we used to do to service men! Free citizens. Orphans were turned into apprentice sweeps and shoved up chimneys; these kids died of the black lung as young as 20. And the factories!? Oh, my God, is it any wonder slaves had it bad; but compared to WHAT!? People were just generally shitty to people back then: on a societal scale.
@nanny7397

@IggyTthunders, There is a huge difference between whites being enslaved and blacks being enslaved. I'm assuming you don't experience a whole lot of racism being Irish. Is it really fair for all European countries to be blamed because of what the UK did? Does that mean I can get mad at Koreans because the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor?

A lot of Indians are racist (in the confines of their inner community) against Muslims, Blacks, Mexicans, and Orientals (who are also equally racist). Pretty much every large homogeneous population deals with a lot of racism against people that aren't like them.

Sterotypical jokes are hilarious. Just don't ignore or forget, your own cultures stereotypes. Many seem to want to seem to forget and then get offended when the shoe is on the other foot. If it's just for the laugh, willing to celebrate the similarities and the differences, makes each race more interesting, rather a flawed one. We were born to love not hate. Laughing at peculiarities of life is a good time had. IMO. Everybody gets upset about racism or racists, because they are UNTRUE and negative commentaries. Hellooooo. It's a topic with a loaded gun.

I once enjoyed watching those maps on the internet "The World according to...(enter anyone)". It's bad to generalize, but some people... No racism in me, just loads of bad jokes and a bit of self-loathing :) A lot is taken over the top these days in the "racism alert" department. BTW Look for the smallest country in the world, you'd be surprised.

@IcarusAllsorts Theyve done a lot of good things too. Who are the best educated and succesfull democratically? Indians or the neigbourhing pakistanians? Who are the best educated and successfull, democratically and economically? African-americans, or "regular" africans? "Imperialism" actually helped their countries out in the long run.
