I am so incredibly grateful to find this online! In 2018 I travelled from South Africa on a pilgrimage to the North Sea Jazz Festival and was looking forward to hearing Carla Bley perform live. My palpable disappointment when it was announced that she couldn't make the gig was transmuted into raw excitement when the stand-in duo was revealed. Two of my favourite musicians of all time in an intimate exploration extrapolating from many of the compositions that move me most in the entire jazz canon. This particular performance was the pinnacle. I had attended the concert alone and I was so moved that I stood, immobile, outside the concert hall for some time with tears running down my face. A lovely Dutch woman came over and gave me a big hug. It was one of those moments that make one wonder at the beauty of life.

This duet is delicious. Unfortunately, Frisell and Surman did never made an album in this intimate configuration (they met when both of them were members of the Paul Bley quartet, in the '80s). This amazing tune was written by Paul Motian. It is "It should have happened a long time ago". Motian used to play this tune with his bass-less trio (with Lovano & Frisell). Thank you for sharing this moment !
