Bill Gate received Dortoral Degree from Harvard University where he dropped out when he was 19 to make his dream come true by created the new innovation that we called " Computer " and he is Microsoft's founder where is the most influence company in the world. I admired everything he had done. He is an initial and creative engineer and of course he is business man that's why he have to think about the profit sometimes. Anyway I think Bill Gate is a genius , incredible and truely icon

Great Message - Super important- Deep a truly passionate - BUT the scenario and the public and the moment to say it maybe is another one? @graduations people is tired and so eager to get out of there....Maybe the same message said in a LEES boring and more inspirational way could have created more interest and no people sleeping.

lol this is what we leave up to Edubuntu which is already helping kids in places such as Africa learn and use computers and the internet. I don't see Microsoft ever doing this unless of course Edubuntu strikes noticeable competition. No matter what Microsoft says I think they are more concerned about losing out on profit. If there is competition in the marketplace, Microsoft changes so as you can see clearly they truly don't give a damn either.

@Azoruk well not everyone has the same passion in whatever Bill was doing. What he gave is a quality speech with terrific content, but what really attracts more people listening intently is not the content, but the humour and the jokes. Explains why people tend to watch more comedies and talk shows more than people watch Discovery Channel and National Geographic. Bill is not responsible for making this thing funny, but I gotta say it was a quite long,hypnotizing but quality speech. Just saying.

What exactly do you find bad about the speech? Aside from it being long-winded and sort of boring? Also, this is all one speech, if you noticed the whole (part 4) thing up top.

the difference between Bill Gates' speech and Steve Jobs' speech is that Bill Gates wants to draw the attention of these young, intellectual people to the much less fortunate world and lives so they somehow will make a difference, while Steve Jobs emphasizes on the importance of being one self ... I think this makes Bill Gates a much more caring man than Steve Jobs (I don't say important or amazing)

How much of this stuff have we heard? Will Gates slash the price of Vista so that children in schools in developing countries could use them as soon as they are on the market? An original Vista disc costs a school teacher's 3 month salary. My fear is no Microsoft software has ever been offered at investment cost despite having churned out billions of dollars in prior profits.

What does Microsoft have to do with anything? Bill Gates has given the majority of his earnings from Microsoft to charity (Bill and Melinda Gates foundation). He's a philanthropist more than he is a businessman (even though he's an incredible businessman!), and he's been able to express that in this speech. Now that Gates has pretty much left Microsoft, it might be different, but your statement is still very incoherent.

If you're not happy with yourself I believe you won't be able to effectively bring joy to anyone else, and hence I cannot say I agree with you. Happiness gives birth to happiness, and I can assure you that when you don't know what to do, or what you're actually doing in life, you're not happy. Steve brings up many valid points on how to be happy in life, which is certainly a compassionate move.

sorry, but I really don't get excited by what Mr. Gates says over here. Perhaps the context in which he is speaking doesn't seem right to me, and frankly speaking, nobody in the audience knows exactly where Bill is coming from with his speech on helping poor people when we all know most people are very much concerned with their own security first. bottom line is: if talking about it the way we are so used to it in this country would solve the problem, then the problem would already be solved...
@dojohansen123

Because Bill is smart enough to understand that software is not so different from other goods and services. There is no reason why society at large should benefit less from having a profit motive in the software industry than in any other industry. If you believe free works better go ahead and make free things, but don't automatically assume that greed is the only possible reason why someone intelligent can believe in capitalism - as well as see it's limitations.

this is bill gates, the richest man on this planet's speech, but if it were yours, it would sound hypocritical, because there's no basis for it. I also believe this is "about all" he can do. I'm not saying is not enough, good or bad, just that everyone must help in his/her own way without being critical and imposing one's ideas and beliefs. This is what I believe.

Bill, if you are really interested in decreasing poverty and making technology available to the poor, why don't you lower your prices on your software, and make your new technology an upgrade at a lower price. This would be a small token of inspiration to other wealthy and influential people.
