Bill King was the greatest football announcer of all time, and the greatest basketball announcer of all time, alongside Chick Hearn. In baseball Vin Scully was better overall, but not quite on King’s level in exciting moments, as you can hear by comparing their calls of the Kirk Gibson home run in the 1988 World Series.

There is a basketball radio clip here somewhere and for a second I couldn't figure out who the announcer was until I heard "Billy Cunningham is on the court yelling at the ref, the ref tells him to get off the court - HE DOES." And right then, I knew it was Bill King calling the Warriors.

Exactly. Today’s homer announcers would’ve called it like some dramatic victory but BK was professional enough to realize how absurd the whole thing was and he called it that way.

Incredible that he could call that play in the manner in which he did. I don’t know what is more exciting watching it as it happened or listening to Bill King describe it. I remember watching it on TV while my dad had just arrived home and was parked in the driveway listening to it on the radio. I remember him running inside immediately after it happened screaming what happened so he could watch the replay. Those were the day when you just knew that the Raiders were going to find a way to win

@@trwent Just listen to the Big Game band on the field call, It was horrendous. His voice was crackling and breaking. He was a decent Cal sports announcer but not great at all. When there was an exciting play his voice just didn't do it. Compared to Bill and Lon Simmons, Scully and the other greats.Even the great Don Klein KCBS and longtime 49ers announcer was much better than Starkey. Don was a classy announcer and announced the 49ers first super bowl. I still have the cassette tape!

Starkey on The Play was clearly imitating this call by King, which had been replayed countless times on TV. That his inept imitation itself became a famous call just underscores the true greatness of King’s original call. And he made it up on the spot. Plus he kept his cool, unlike Starkey.

Just brutal officiating by a pretty decent NFL Referee: Jerry Markbreit; that play should have been ruled an incomplete pass. Markbreit was not at a 45-degree angle to properly rule on it. Nevertheless, one of the most memorable radio calls by a truly superb play-by-play broadcaster: BILL KING. (Mr. Monte Stickels was the radio analyst).

@Bob Harris Besides the nickname (Raiders), the uniforms and helmet decals, the Vegas version of the team may as well be another franchise entirely. My younger brother (we've both watched the team since the George Blanda years) doesn't understand why everyone on (sports talk) radio and TV constantly call the team the Raiders and never "Vegas". He refuses to call the team anything except "Vegas", same goes for Arizona (formerly St. Louis Cardinals) and Indianapolis (formerly Baltimore Colts). He doesn't give any recognition to their nicknames anymore!
