Spacy made a great point of distinction at the end: you don't need to feel sorry (sympathize) for the man but you CAN show empathy for the sad turn of events that led to his wrong decisions.

Alex Townsend Who's "very uneducated" at FNC? Greta van Susteren went to Georgetown Law. Megyn Kelly went to Syracuse, and then on to Albany Law. Gretchen Carlson went to Stanford. In fact, Sean Hannity is pretty much the only FNC reporter that I could find that didn't go to college, but even he went to NYU and later dropped out. So...who are these people again?

O'Reilly has no grasp of nuance. Everything is black or white - or some other neat little label. He doesn't understand what Kevin was saying about the culture. Bill thought Kevin was making excuses for the "bad guy," when in reality, the fact that the culture continues to persist is the real problem. Kevin was trying to say Jack Abramoff was just a fall guy, and that no real change was affected. But if all O'Reilly's going to do is think "Bad Guy" and then say "Simple as that! Can't argue with that!" then he's missing out on the cognitive experience of thinking about it for 5 seconds wherein he'd discover the reality Kevin was talking about.

I've respected O'Reilly more times than one but I think he needs to understand, which he may or may not, is that you need to give the audience a sense of repeatability to every character, good or bad, to get the audience invested in the character and the story. There are most definitely good human qualities in the worst of us. Doesn't make 'em any better but it does make him human.

This interview is so ironic on so many levels. -Both Spacey & O'Reilly were the biggest names in entertainment & both were felled by sex misconduct. - Hollywood now unapologetically excludes anyone who isn't aligned politically with the industry. - Empathy in Hollywood only applies to people who claim to be victims and victim ideology. - Listen at 2:04 carefully. The same applies to Hollywood. People got thrown under the bus to show that they cleaned up the industry, but they really haven't. - Hypocrisy is blatant also in Hollywood because the culture still exists that promotes misconduct of all types & the people who virtue signal the most are still profiting from the toxic culture.

I don't get what Kevin Spacey's saying, with his answer to Bill's first question. Is he implying that the reason most openly political people in Hollywood are Liberals is because Conservatives are not "empathetic" and more prejudiced and "judgmental"? Pardon me, Kevin, but that sounds highly prejudiced and judgmental. It's a common excuse by the Left to explain the slanting in Hollywood: "The reason there are more Liberals Hollywood are because you have to be more empathetic and understanding!" Which, of course, is not an empathetic or understanding mindset in the slightest. Heck, just switch "communist" with "Conservative" and these same people would disown those statements and lecture on McCarthyism.

+Hard Boiled Entertainment I don't think that's what he was implying but by definition, Conservatives would have a hard time playing diverse roles, like Noriss, Segal or Willis. Just look at their acting career and they are fairly limited in what they do. I don't see Hollywood treating them as outcasts though, as Bill was implying. Conservative- adjective 1. holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion synonyms: traditionalist, traditional, conventional, orthodox, old-fashioned, ...
@Hard_Boiled_Entertainment
9 жыл бұрын
+AltruisticWarrior The problem is, despite that literal definition...dictionary definitions don't hold much water in the terminology of American politics. "Liberal", for example, literally refers to "liberty", individualism, and limited government. Nowadays, that refers more to those on the Right than those on the Left (hence why the term "Libertarian" was created--because FDR appropriated the term "Liberal" to describe supporters of his expansive "New Deal" programs). And besides, that would have no bearing on someone's acting talent. I will see your Norris, Segal, and Willis...and I will raise you Dennis Hopper, John Voight, Kelsey Grammar, Kurt Russel, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, and Gary Oldman.
