It's 100% understandable. One, most basketball fans today weren't born when Russell played or were too young to remember him. Two, the NBA only became popular in the 90s, largely thanks to MJ's marketing. Three, and most importantly, most fans gravitate to spectacular individual talent of MJ, fail to understand Russell greatness as a team leader that name his team better.
@vipnetworker
2 жыл бұрын
This video helped me develop a great respect and appreciation for Bill Russell. That said, his level of play doesn’t even come close to Jordan. When Russell played, there were only 8 teams in the NBA and most of the players/teams then weren’t as good as an average junior high team today, or even in the 90’s. Russell was dominate in his time and likely could have been good to great in any era, but Jordan was a far superior player. That said… we’ll never know how good Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and many others could have been in an era with better competition. That is the only “X” factor.
@broadstreet21
2 жыл бұрын
@@vipnetworker I respectfully disagree. I've seen some videos from the 60s, and saw the stats. Keep in mind, a smaller league means more talent concentration. Superstars in the 90s would be fighting for roster spots in the 60s with a quarter of job openings. Secondly, in a smaller league, opponents get familiar with each other and understand how to play to beat their unbeatable challenger. At least they should. The best team doesn't stay the best team if someone is working to solve them and beat them next time. Russell faced off against opponents the likes MJ never faced, particularly Wilt Chaimberlain, a virtual super freak, boasting stats that would scare ypu silly. He faced Elgin Baylor, the MJ before there were an MJ says fans from the 60s. And he faced Jerry West, a guy who could be the scoring leader per game had he played with a three point line. And he was maybe one play away from holding all three of them untitled.

Tuco The Rat wilt earned a reputation for fighting with teammates for not helping boost his stats. He was such a bad teammate, that he was traded. The players voted for mvp at the time and everyone in the league agreed Russell was better, which is why he won more mvps than wilt. 20 points and 30 rebounds will always be better than 35 points and 40 rebounds if you win. Bill Russell created an overpowered fast break offense and played to win. As for defense, he held your “supreme scorer” to not a single point in a half and destroyed him in defense in their finals matchups. Bill never lost a game 7 but wilt made sure to get his 40 points. Wilt is an amazing player and will never be forgotten. He was a player who gained a reputation for his obsession with stuffing the stat sheet and not winning. He bounced around the league and the players in the league saw bill was better because they voted him mvp. Also, the offense relied and was built around Bills supreme fast break outlet passing, his teammates didn’t win without him until they rebuilt and that took 10 years after he retired. Don’t try to use an uninformed opinion on something you are not informed about. Finally, basketball games are determined by if you win or lose. Bill won and Wilt lost.

What black people need to understand is that Bill Russell, Henry Aaron, Willie Mays, Oscar Robinson....even militant Mohammad Ali had WHITE fans who at least understood a little bit. Wilt always dominated Bill but the Celtics had a better team and had much better luck Wilt should have beat them 2 more times the fluky way they won in 1969 and the game where John Havlicek stole the ball Wilts teams should have won and the one where that stupid coach kept him out they would have won and many more where they lost by a single basket or two! Bill was much luckier than Chamberlain even though Chamberlain put up twice the amount of points had 55 rebounds against Bill! Wilt beat up Bill badly but Bill had the better team. Just wanted to speak the truth i know when they do these dedication videos they twist the truth and start kissing ass a little too aggressively like saying the lane was widened because of Bill wrong again it was widened because of the goat Wilt the Stilton. People can not seem to understand something a little kid would!!! Basketball is a team game!!!!!!!!!!!! One man does not win a basketball game or championship!!!!!!! Take two players one GREAT one AVERAGE but the one who is average is on a team that won 5 championships and the great player is on a team that wins zero championships so with the logic of many all of a sudden the average player is better than the great one lol!!!! No he is not one on one the great player would kill the average one so stop basing the greatness of a player based on championships you can do that with BOXING and TENNIS but not a team sport why is this hard to understand i could care less how many championships a basketball player has!!! it tells me nothing about him all it tells me is he was on some great teams!!

@@erics9754 You sound rather mad and angry, these are opinons. When i say Bill Russel beat Wilt i dont mean 1 on 1, i mean in a team game, just stating facts and history. My comment was a comment trubuting Bill Russel and his success and winning, ( Fan boys facts dont matter about feelings) Im not the hurt one going on a rant here... Yeah i even agree Wilt would probaly beat Wilt 1 on 1 but not in a team game. However good whoever team was its basketball at the highest level, their all good players, Russell found a way to win and has the rings to proof it, Him and Russel were best freinds too and respected and admired eachother, if wilt ir praising him then i think he was pretty good! Dont use your comments to bash and attack eachother, I realize you must be a Wilt fan. He was an amazing player, i wish my original comment talked more about him but it happened to be about Bill. Thanks for your opinon and input, wether true or not not everyone will agree with either of us, respect eachother opinons how Bill and Wilt did and have a good day! No need to bully, put down, or name call....

@@erics9754 They were both great players, yes Wilt was better 1 on 1, and Russel did have the better team, but you seem like a Bill Russell hater... Just appreciate them both!! and be happy for both of them, as good as Wilt was, Russel was a better teammate and winner and regardless of what u say history proofs that... This wasnt a Wilt video, if it was then youd see me talking about how good he was, yeah its cool to show how good Wilt was and adire him, but your disrespecting Bill Russel and what hes done and accomplshed....

@@codydale9123 Sorry if you got that impression. I admire Bill he was the best team player and I understand why Red loved him. I guess I just got tired of everyone bashing Wilt and basing a players talent on how many championships their teams won but I rank Bird and Russell tied for second greatest so as you can see I am no hater of Bill. He was one of the smartest players that ever played. Wilt Bird and Bill all had thar in common.

According to an algorithm the most important numbers in winning basketball games are: Points + Rebounds + Steals - Field Goal Attempts - Turnovers. Let's ignore Steals and Turnovers because that data is not available for every player. Here are my results so far: ================ 1. Wilt Chamberlain - 30.1 + 22.9 - 22.5 = 30.50 2. Bill Russell - 15.1 + 22.5 - 13.4 = 24.20 (He terrorized everybody near the basket for 13 years) 3. Bob Pettit - 26.4 + 16.2 - 21.3 = 21.30 4. Charles Barkley - 22.1 + 11.7 - 14.5 = 19.30 5. Shaquille O'Neil - 23.7 + 10.9 - 16.1 = 18.50 6. Kareem Adbul Jabbar - 24.6 + 11.2 - 18.1 = 17.70 7. David Robinson - 21.1 + 10.6 - 14.4 = 17.30 8. Karl Malone - 25.0 + 10.1 - 17.8 = 17.30 9. Elgin Baylor - 27.4 + 13.5 - 23.8 = 17.10 **10. Anthony Davis - 23.9 + 10.2 - 17.3 = 16.80 11. George Mikan - 23.1 + 13.4 - 20.0 = 16.50 12. Hakeem Olajuwon - 21.8 + 11.1 - 17.0 = 15.90 **13. Giannis Antetokounmpo - 20.9 + 9.1 - 14.4 = 15.60 **14. Kevin Durant - 27.0 + 7.1 - 18.6 = 15.50 15. Tim Dunkin - 19.0 + 10.8 - 14.6 = 15.20 **16. Luka Doncic - 25.7 + 8.4 - 19.1 = 15.00 **17. Lebron James - 27.1 + 7.4 - 19.5 = 15.00 18. Larry Bird - 24.3 + 10.0 - 19.3 = 15.00 19. Dennis Rodman - 7.3 + 13.1 = 5.8 = 14.60 20. Oscar Robinson - 25.7 + 7.5 - 18.9 = 14.30 21. Alonzo Mourning - 17.1 + 8.5 - 11.6 = 14.00 **22. James Harden - 25.1 + 5.5 - 16.7 = 13.90 23. Magic Johnson - 19.5 + 7.2 - 13.2 = 13.50 24. Michael Jordan - 30.1 + 6.2 - 22.9 = 13.40 25. Dirk Nowitzki - 20.7 + 7.5 - 15.6 = 12.60 26. Jerry West - 27.0 + 5.8 - 20.4 = 12.40 27. Julius Erving - 21.0 + 9.8 - 18.8 = 12.00 28. Kawhi Leonard - 19.2 + 6.4 - 14.0 = 11.60 **29. Stephen Curry - 24.2 + 4.6 - 17.4 = 11.40 30. George Gervin - 26.2 + 4.6 - 19.4 = 11.40 31. Dominique Wilkins - 24.8 + 6.7 - 20.1 = 11.40 32. Marcus Camby - 9.5 + 9.8 - 8.3 = 11.00 33.
