Originally appearing on their fantastic 1981 LP Jam the Box, this track has remained one of my favorite broken-hearted anthems over the many years since then. Lori Ham's vamp-out vocals towards the end of the song can still bring tears to my eyes.
There's so much beauty in this song. Pure Delite's horn arrangement displays a stately elegance that hovers there right before you, pulling you along and lifting you up. The rhythm section of Bo Freeman on bass, Pete Escovedo and Bill Summers himself on percussion, and William Kennedy on drums are all top-notch performers who ground this slow jam in an irresistible groove that just calls you to your feet and out onto the floor. Scott Roberts's electric piano is so sweet it's like aural chocolate for the soul. And while the lead vocals by Claytoven Richardson, Calvin Tillery and much of the band are enough to get me misty already, it's when Lori Ham starts to lament those dreams, those dreams that melt in between each line..., that's when this song becomes eternal for me.
