The most valuable advice I take from my interpretation of Bill's artistic process is that it seems he doesn't try to make himself anything he is not, he acknowledges his shortcomings and strengths and creates methods to work around himself.

Amazing show, man. You did a fantastic job interviewing Bill, given how he seems to have some trouble in these kind of contexts. I feel like you didn't speak about anything in specific for 45 minutes, yet I still enjoyed a lot watching it! Just a natural conversation with Bill, which is actually a lot - and super great for me, as a Bill Wurtz fan

Amazing interview! Although as a person who’s a little too obsessed with internet, I have to make a few corrections: 1. Latency with today’s internet technology is near impossible for humans to detect. Assuming you both are from the United States or Canada, you will have a latency of at maximum 65 milliseconds (Los Angeles to New York). Assuming you guys do not live across the country from one another, you’ll have even less latency. I’m not necessarily sure what Bill’s talking about when he says landlines have the least latency because landlines are on DSL, which is outdated and experiences way more latency compared to modern copper coax and fiber optics (which I assume both you and Bill have). The most common reason for the telephone effect is your means of communication (in this case, if I’m not mistaken, Zoom). Zoom’s servers aren’t the greatest, hence the latency. Faster services such as Discord experience little to no latency. Even if you experience the maximum latency possible between two entities in North America (65 milliseconds), 65 milliseconds is less than 7/100 of a single second. This is near impossible for a human to pick up. And by the way, the latency from North America to Europe is about 100 milliseconds, which is 1/10 of a second and is still very difficult for a human to pick up. Perhaps experiment with Discord for future interviews because the latency is near nonexistent. 2. Access points (the things that send wifi signals) do not use sound waves. This would be a terrible design because tons of things (like walls) can easily block sounds, and there would be too much interference from third party sounds. In reality, they use EM waves. Although, ethernet cables are still faster because wired is always better than wireless.

why hasn't anyone replied to this? point #1 is so incorrect! saying latency over video calls is near impossible to detect is probably worse than saying the human eye can't see past 30 fps. a musical instrument becomes unplayable at about 40ms of latency, and reading and responding to body language / facial cues in a conversation can absolutely be an activity with a similar level of nuance especially if you want to go deep. i don't doubt that discord's servers have better latency than Zoom's, but the numbers you've chosen of 65 / 100 ms are both 1. common, and 2, would absolutely be noticable by anyone trying to get a well-timed word in at the end of their conversation partner's sentence.

@@bureaucracyjames I’m sorry James but I respectfully disagree. The average human reaction time is 150 to 300 milliseconds, with the fastest recorded reaction time being 100 milliseconds. Now if you put two phones next to each other, where someone is talking into one of the phones, and if we hypothetically make it so echos aren’t a problem, yes, you will notice an extremely small delay between the sound of the caller and the receiving end. This delay is so small to the point where, assuming you’re blindfolded and you don’t know how many phones are in the room (if any at all), you can just barely make out that there is more than one phone because it will appear as if two people with identical voices are talking at the same time. If there is no delay at all, it would appear as if only one person is talking. However, just because this delay is detectable by the human ear in a controlled setting (with two phones next to each other) does not mean it’s detectable in a real world scenario. Again, 60 milliseconds is far shorter than the average (and even fastest) human reaction times, meaning that the delay is so short to the point where you won’t even be able to physically react to the caller on the other end before the audio reaches your device, thus shortening the delay below 60 milliseconds is completely redundant in a real world setting. There is no point in making the delay shorter if it doesn’t impact the calling experience; you can’t physically even react in time before the audio reaches your device. In short, 60 milliseconds is nowhere near long enough to cause dead air in a call. I’d like to clarify my stance: yes, in a controlled environment, if you’re doing something like playing a musical instrument, you will be able to pick up a slight delay. Similarly, with the hypothetical phone situation I described above, your ears will be able to pick up on a very minuscule delay. However, with calls in the real world, this is a completely different scenario because you’re not going to be directly adjacent to the person you’re calling, thus you can’t detect the delay. It is physically impossible to notice a 60 millisecond delay throughout a call because the human reaction time simply isn’t fast enough. It’s not nearly significant enough to negatively impact the calling experience.
@bureaucracyjames

@@doghut you seem to be confusing reaction time with something else. reaction time is a completely different phenomenon than noticing that an event has occurred a few milliseconds later than it should have. if you went to see a band and the drummer hit a note 60ms too late, sure it would take you about 150 to 300ms before you realized it, but after that reaction time has passed you would probably walk out or ask for your money back because 60ms is a significant error in that context -- similar to realtime feedback on a video call. reaction time has nothing to do with noticing accuracy of time passing at a small scale. a tone at A=440hz is vibrating at a rate of about 2.2ms, and if you can tell the difference between that and any other note, then you can notice things happening faster than your reaction time. just because a span of time is shorter than you can react to it doesn't mean you get short-term amnesia about it. tl;dr, yes, a delay of 60ms is noticable and not ideal for video calls.
@doghut

@@bureaucracyjames I already addressed your points. Yes, if you have a reference subject adjacent to another subject being contacted by the reference subject, your ears can pick up a slight delay. However, when you’re calling someone, you physically can’t pick up on the delay because you don’t have a reference subject; it’s way too fast. We know this isn’t an issue in the real world because gamers, who often use platforms like Discord, always complain about ping within video games, yet never complain about the ping with calls because it’s so insignificant. Since alerting teammates in real time is essential in a video game context, the fact that gamers never complain about delays with video calling speaks volume. Your band example doesn’t necessarily make sense either because 60 millisecond delays in a concert setting are actually more common than you think. It takes sound 3 milliseconds to travel a meter, meaning if you were 20 meters away from the stage, it would take 60 milliseconds for the sound from the stage to travel to you. If you’re on the stage playing an instrument, yes, a 60 millisecond delay is bad because you have to sync perfectly with your group, but if you’re in the audience, you really won’t notice it at all. Remember: 60 milliseconds is 0.06 seconds. That’s ridiculously fast! If the gamers and esports players can’t notice this delay when they’re video calling for a real-time communication essential game, neither can anyone else.

Bill Wurtz is one of my favorite content creators who rarely does interviews / podcasts, and I think you had a lovely natural conversation with him, it's nice seeing him in this setting. However, I wish the conversation was abit less mundane. Talking about internet speeds of different hosts, banging on and on about him doing a show maybe in the future is not very interesting imo. I feel like nothing of real substance was talked about the first 30 minutes. You could have talked about music, production, songwriting process, mixing process .. Endless topics that I'd love to have his opinion on ! Just abit of constructive critism ! Thanks for your work either way.

When bill talked about doing a talk show "breaking the rules" of what's conventional, my guess is that he's aiming at something similar to what Caleb Pressley and Zach Galifianakis do...with a comedic tone, heavily edited. That's why doing it remote with delay would be detrimental, I think...cause this kind of format is very much reliant on good timing. Great talk btw.

I remember him saying he's going to do another live-sorta show April 7th on his questions page! At first I thought it was a joke, having only seen him once on a podcast, but then, a similar question, and he answers with the exact same date! I've been excited ever since, and you can imagine my confusion when I failed to find anything Bill-related on the 7th. Here I am, though (a clip from the first part got recommended) finishing both parts in one sitting- You're both real ones for this hahah, super interesting stuff Also, your talk about having a random amount of the conversation "not streamed" reminded me of the youtube legend Anthony Padilla! He nowadays does long in-person interviews and leaves out and edits specific parts of them, while uploading the rest exclusively to his patreon. Pretty cool stuff, I recommend checking him out :)

My first time seeing the show. I clicked on this to see what Bill had to say. The amount you talked about yourself and your show and your experiences and your practices was frankly annoying. On the other hand, well done for engaging Bill in actual conversation. I have the feeling I would be able to merit his attention for about 2 seconds. Bill’s point about the delay over the internet is really significant. I wish you had talked about music, even a little. Maybe in the February show or the July show … I’ll try those next.
