This is the most stunning thing I have ever seen. I cannot believe how simple you made this look though. I would LOVE to do something like this, but I don't have the room, time, or money. Maybe one day in the future though because this is stunning. I can't believe I am about to say this, but it looks better than something nature could create. If I were to ask my mom if I could do this, she would think I was crazy. I tried a Paludarium before, but it looked terrible. Please keep amazing us with these amazing builds.

@MrCookster65
9 жыл бұрын
Mitchell Lubline Thanks for the kind words :) I used a combination of polystyrene sheet and expanding foam for the background. The lighting is 6 x 10W LED downlights. The kind used in the ceiling of a house. They are providing a good diffused light and are 6000 Kelvin temperature.

How did you instal the plants…besides the moss(fantastic method by the way; I saw the process vid) How do you handle trimming of the plants and/ or moss? What is the humidity level? What kind of filtration are you using?
@MrCookster65
10 жыл бұрын
Hi Beyond Pawz, Trimming is done a little bit at a time using sharp aquascaping scissors. Humidity level has not been measured but it is high at a guess... The tank is its own filter. The tank water is pumped up to a conduit that is situated across the back and both side top perimeters and dribbles down the background 24/7 ... this process naturally, biologically and mechanically removes impurities from the water before it returns to the main water body through the substrate. It is approximately 8-9 months now and only one water change has been performed, with a few top ups.
@beyondpawz4079

Thanks for responding, Ian. I'm Laurie I like the idea of a drip system. Most folks seem to use misting. Is it difficult to set up for drip? How would you regulate? What are the lighting requirements for a tank like yours? The lighting baffles me. I'd like to include critters at some point but seems like the lighting is more to keep the plants happy and the animals will be happy if the plants are happy. All of this has come a long way since I tried it ten years ago. Eventually got fed up. I will be automating the water this time wether drip or mist. And I'm dying to try some mosses.
@beyondpawz4079
10 жыл бұрын
OH, also, do you use CO2 for the water plants?
@MrCookster65
10 жыл бұрын
Nice to meet you Laurie :) My drip system was basically a 'set it up and see' process. Before I installed it into the tank I gave it a trial run to see how strong the pump would be compared to the height it had to push the water.. As it turned out the pump capacity was just enough to create a dribble from all the spray heads I had in the conduit.. Enough to keep the walls wet without having water spraying all around the place. The lighting originally was 2 x double 28W T5 fluros using Grow tubes ... But I have changed now to using 6 x 10W 6000K LED downlights. The change of light has had no noticeable effect in either direction. Depending on what critters you keep will determine whether or not you will need the addition of a UV producing light or not. As for the water plants, I have not added anything to the water since day 1. BUT.... the substrate I am using (CalAqua Labs Black Soil) is designed to give a slow release of nutrients and buffer the water to a low pH as well.... When this substrate is 'spent' I guess I will have to monitor how plants perform and add ferts as needed.
@belam127

I'm really interested in this .May i ask how do you keep the plants above the water ,do you actually water them to keep them alive ? sorry for my stupid question .
@MrCookster65
9 жыл бұрын
Hi Be Lam ... There is no such thing as a 'stupid question' when you want to understand something :) ..The plants are sitting in saturated substrate that is constantly kept wet with water from the tank dribbling down over the walls and through the substrate. .. The plants that are above the substrate level sitting on the walls and branches etc. are surviving on the high humidity within the tank environment.. Hope that answers your 'excellent' question. :)

How big is your tank? Is it easy to build the backdrop using real rocks?
@MrCookster65

Hi Adam ... It is a 4x2x2 aquarium ... I used foam for my background. It is painted and some parts covered with coir/peat. Building with real rocks would be possible but costly and bulky.

Sorry to hear that loue :/ ... I have a similar problem in the areas of the tank where the moss is not kept wet at all times. ...it may be worth noting here that any of the moss that is drawing its water via capillary action is not as lush as the constantly wet moss. This tank environment is also very high humidity. This is true for the aquatic mosses I have used in this set-up. But I can't help if your moss is a terrestrial variety. I have no personal experience with land mosses. But thinking about it logically from experience, it would thrive if kept very damp or wet. Most mosses are typically low light and low nutrient varieties of plant. The lighting I am using is 6 x 10W 6000K LED lights.

@MrCookster65
9 жыл бұрын
Liam Wharton I think the answer to your question is the tank has no heater... The room in which this tank lives is constant around 20-22 degrees C. ... The species of fish can tolerate a wide parameter of temperature. The filter is the tank itself. The water is pumped up to the top of the plant covered walls and as it trickles through to the bottom it is mechanically and biologically filtered.
