Other correspondents have mentioned the Scottish context and really thus is down to the fact IT IS EXPECTED to subsume English identity within the British one - so as not to upset the Scots OVER AND ABOVE the Welsh or even the English regions who are thought to have 'separatist' cultures (regions such as Cornwall etc). The Tories pre Thatcher were famed for being pragmatic (whether you agree with that or not). And now the Tories have simply returned to that mode. The late 90s and first half of the 00s were weird because our politics flipped, Labour became pragmatic and the Tories became ideological but now we're back to what it was like most of the 20th Century.

In any case, its not a helpful phrase or an actual refutation of anything he's saying, just a personal attack. This segment on patriotism really strikes a chord with what I've been thinking recently; I've often in the past dismissed patriotism as a concept as a more right wing and negative thing, but even when I did so it often felt to me like I was being slightly intellectually dishonest with myself; part of the reason I am a socialist is because I want to be part of something bigger than I am; a community; an ideal I think many socialists share. Plus I have always taken a certain degree of pride in things this country does well. A lot of people rightly feel like the bonds which hold our country, our community, together are being eroded, while the Conservatives, whose individualism and austerity are the very things causing that erosion, are capitalizing on this by pitching divisive culture war politics as a solution. Billy is right, instead of dismissing patriotism, we on the left need to pitch an alternate, inclusive patriotism in line with our ideals; we have policies which can tackle this loss of sense of community; we just need to get better at presenting that in the context of the culture war

@boboboborific

I think the fear of nationalism is perfectly grounded - historical precedents of encouraging people to do awful things in the name of nationalist ideology abound. That said, I think it is probably integral to the human psyche. The problem is a lot of our ideology is based upon romantic idealism of centuries past - a lot of what we want, for all of us to be fully realised human beings... if it is possible, it would require centuries and generations of the sort of society we want to create such a utopia. Unlikely. I think in the sense that people like religion, they like nationalism, they like their team and their identity. Perhaps consider it as a riff in a song, or part of a chord. Intellectually, I think the argument can be made that nationalism is irrational, supremacy of human identity over arbitrary national borders etc... but the public rarely get that. I think our optimistic view of human nature is also somewhat defective - people are there to be influenced, a saint can be a sinner and vice versa... the question is whether we can get the people who might be amenable to an objectively better world on our side or not. Separate intellectual truth from politics. We aren't there yet, and we may well never be.

Agree and disagree, Thatcher had to express her ideology as she wanted to destroy unions/workers rights and impose corporatism. The Tories of today stand for the same things but live in a world where corporations are well looked after, so they exist simply to keep the society Thatcher built, which is now just mainstream. Great interview...have loved Billy since I saw him play at UEA in 1984. He is spot on when he says patriotism is about shared values, shared space and a sense of belonging!

I always chuckle when people say the worlds lingua franca is english. It's undoubtedly true, but a fun linguistic anacronysm.

First I want to state that I am a million miles away from being “on the left”, in general I don’t agree with socialism and I disagree with a lot of other “typical lefty” views. But I do not understand patriotism at all. I don’t understand this idea that I should have a special attachment to the arbitrary patch of land I happen to be born on. I don’t understand the idea that I should have some sense of togetherness or “we are on the same team” feeling towards other random people that also happen to have been born on the same patch of land as me. I also don’t understand this idea of feeling either pride or any other sort of attachment to things other people have done that also happen to have been born on the same patch of land as me. I wouldn’t say WE won the world cup in 1966, I didn’t exist in 1966, the England football team of 1966 won the world cup, not “we” … “we” is when it's me plus some other people, if I wasn’t directly involved for me it is NEVER a “we” thing, no matter where the people involved happen to have been born. Like I said at the start, I just don’t get patriotism or the language used with it at all. And I am more than happy to say that I am not even a tiny bit patriotic.

@Sir Squegg Haha I just added that first line to emphasise that I am not a member of choir coming along to add a comment that people might expect someone that watches Owen Jones videos might say. No doubt I have some left leaning views as illustrated here (if everything I typed in my previous comment is considered a ‘lefty’ view).

@@xdgamesCoUk personally i think you are on the brink of a growth spurt towards a better self. you hang out on socialist youtube channels even if you are only here for stewart lee, you distance yourself from the uncritical magical thinking of right wing nationalism, yet you also distance yourself from the people you imagine use this channel. you could just be a centrist? there is no choir. compare the comments section on a right wing channel with a left wing channel. the former is mostly agreement on how much they hate progressive politics and those who support it. on the left we criticize each other. its more like a group of solo instrumentalists playing their own tunes and calling it music. it's a mess but it is our mess because despite being committed to collectivism and mutual aid we are all individualists. i feel like once you understand that internal paradox you will understand the humor, and the spirit of leftism. it is how we won the war. we pulled together and ripped the piss out of each other because noone is better than anyone else. that is why we dont wave flags or worship royalty, the establishment etc. to us these things are the tangible proof of an unfair society and the inequality that has divided us for centuries. you can join us anytime. that is my pitch.

The meaning of Socialism (as a catch all phrase) has changed in the popular context and I've stopped using the word because I think it's impossible for both it's advocates and detractors to use the word in a meaningful way like it was before this century. That's the Media's fault. And it's also the Americanisation of mainstream Progressive politics and the political sciences in this country. In addition, it's very telling that Owen Jones gives an olive branch to Billy Bragg after he and Phil Redmond both got so publicly taken in by David Cameron/Steve Hilton/ 'The Big Society' promise (that isn't necessarily a criticism by the way).

the care. health, safety, and opportunity of the people of the country would have been better served under Corbyn's Labour, so yes it's possible, but not until more of the population suffer, to bring about their awareness, sadly.

@MrMiller - there's no guarantee that suffering will bring people to their sense - I recall how we suffered under successive Thatcher governments (I was a teenager when she first got in) but we still kept on voting for her - why? because the media managed to convince us that there was no viable alternative.

@@honeychurchgipsy6 yes. They fed us a diet of fear about organised labour and their degrading of middle class values that had been growing since the end of WWII, despite the fact it was actually a failure of global finance to account for the oil rich nations wanting more back In royalties?
