I agree.. Fortunately there are still great great new bands that somewhat purposely slip through the cracks of mainstream music that are exactly what you mean. I might suggest a few artists you may or may not have listened to that are incredible musicians creating similar funk Jams both new and old style music... A few that come to mind are Phish, widespread panic, TAUK, lettuce, lotus, bonobo.. A mixture of genres that remind me of this. Cheers! Check out my channel for ever growing playlists of choice songs from various genres and bands 🙃

OMG ! this band was way up there with the greatest jazz fusion ensembles ever (Return to Forever, Mahavishnu, Weather Report) .... B.C. at his peak, after the extensive touring and recording with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and his early solo projects, Duke fresh from several albums and tours with Zappa (how much can you learn?) John still had hair and just burst into the fusion scene and blew everybody's mind ! Alphonso had just been with Weather Report for a short period before Jaco Pastorius joined them (W.R.) ..... but just listen to the music and everybody's playing ... TOO MUCH !

Unrelated to the band, this comment section is fucking gold. Good job everyone!!
I'm a guitar player, but a strange coincidence of events led to me recently getting string of gigs on drums. I still enjoy listening to my Billy Cobham records, plus those by several other artists he's recorded & toured with. My extended internet search brought me here. I was looking to learn some drumming skills in a hurry. Billy has said that he'd experienced astral projection onstage while on tour in Europe. he said he'd find himself above & in front of the stage, watching himself play. He said that he'd witness himself playing things that were normally too difficult & demanding for him to execute. That may or may not be what astral projection is, but I had a similar experience just one time and it kinda freaked me out. I was the new guy in an established band, and about 15 minutes into my first-ever set with them, I suddenly felt weak, dizzy, and about to pass out. I was loaded up on weed, just like every other minute of my musical life, but I was sober and trying hard to be as professional as I could be. Anyway, I didn't get any feeling that I actually exited my physical body, but I didn't seem to have any control over what I was doing. I had to prop myself against a wall to assure myself I wouldn't topple over, and I was struggling hard to try to remain conscious. I could not even grasp what song it was that we were playing, and I was totally lost. I totally had no idea what the hell was even going on. I recall that I looked at a spot on the fretboard, thinking, "That note might be okay, if I can play that one." That's how out-of-it I was. Well, in spite of me worrying that I was fucking about to die or something & there'd be a big fiasco of a scene with EMT's, I couldn't believe that, somehow, I was actually killing it on the guitar, like never before in my life. Shit was happening with my fingers that was way beyond my skill level. I had absolutely no control, my hands might as well have been some player's hands on a TV screen. What my hands were playing was noticeably getting a very-favorable response from the band and the audience. I don't know if this next part was better or worse or what, but the next thing I knew, the band members had sort of moved a little off to the side and here I was, in the middle of a guitar solo. I didn't even know it was supposed to be my solo. I was somehow vaguely aware that the crowd was paying attention, and rarest of all, I got a round of applause at the end of the solo. I couldn't have told anyone a single note or riff that I'd played, it seemingly all played itself while I merely observed with extreme bewilderment. Hell, I remember I couldn't even guess what the next chord was gonna be. The feeling was a lot like if I was looking down on a busy street from a balcony or something, with no control over the motions of my hands a mile below. Except, again, I felt as if I was seeing normally with my eyes from in my head, and not from up above the room or anything like that. But at the end of whatever song it was, I peeled off some unbelievable lick, and the crowd cheered again. They went nuts on me as soon as the song was over, and in a minute or so, everything going on in my head was back to normal. I don't expect anyone to believe this, but I swear, it actually happened. I'll probably never get to find out what it was. Well, it wasn't long after it happened that I got tired of telling people about it. I wrote it all down shortly afterward and sort of moved on with my life. But then a year ago, I happened to read what Billy Cobham said, and now I want to see if there's anything about this that I might learn. I'm in my 60's and I've had some freaky nerve issues here & there. I'm thinking it might be that I just had something go temporarily awry in my brain. I don't take any talk of the supernatural seriously. Anyone who has anything to suggest, for a website or a study will be much appreciated. Also, I already took more than my fair share of ridicule & flak for even telling my closest friends about this, so any trolls can save their smartass remarks for their mom's funeral. Thanks for reading this.
Wonder if he got those yellow drums from Alex Van Halen,LOL

Really good Jazz fusion is out there! Sadly, not enough of it! Between 66-78 (66 because Hendrix came out in England and inspired Fusion in mho) was the most important artistic time in music acoustic jazz had gone as far as it was gonna go without the Avant-gards brain's falling out(I like Avant-gard until I find my brains oozing out my ears.)It was a good time for music. Everyone, well not EVERYONE,was experimenting from rock 2 Jazz mixing with classical both European and Indian! African beats and vocalization... Jazz alone covers so much different styles from swing 2 bop, latin, Avant-gard Wich means new but Eric Dolphy is still relevant anyways Good Fucking music. although I rant I hate labaling music but I understand why! That's why Fusion gets a bad rep. It defies catagoration! Rock purest hate it and jazz purest hate it saying they don't belong. Bullshit...WHAT ARE BOTH ROCK AND JAZZ BASED ON? THE BLUES!!!! YOU LAIMO PURISTS! And by the way I like the purists music! I just don't get offended by music That crosses the barriers music critics put up. who are they 2 say what's right and wrong. Don't mind me.... I'm a little nuts 😜

This will be totally off topic. In 1974, I had the priviliege of playing Crazy 8's with Eric Clapton's favorite blues guitarist, Freddie King, and two members of his band. The weird thing was after playing a dozen hands or so, I'd won over half of them. No skill on my part other than playing up to strength of the cards dealt to me. Freddie left around that point because his band, composed of four white dudes a few years older than me, wanted to break out the drugs. Freddie wasn't "comfortable" around them because of the risks of unfair prosecution for a black man. Besides, he'd rather drink bourbon with club soda as I recall.
