What an impressive guitar solo by Frank Gambale. Very nice.

Frank is good but Tommy Bolin's version kicks ass supreme, and he was only a teenager at the time

I disagree: to me the best version of 'Stratus' is on the CD Stanley Clarke & friends - live at the Greek, from 1994 -Clarke, Billy Cobham,Larry Carlton, Derron Johnson(keys) and Najee(sax). Carlton's style is not as fast or chop-oriented as Gambale's (who is a great player, all his own),but bluesy, soulful and melodic;also they change the groove for both the sax and guitar solos, which make it interesting.

Frank Gambale. Holy crap. From day one, Frank has been absolutely astonishing. He is without question one of guitardom's greatest contributors and innovators. Plus, his note choices, execution and tone are also always without fail A+++.

The title is indeed "Stratus", "Stratus" is on the album named "Spectrum". And "Spectrum" is another great song by Cobham too...

You mean Frank Gambale? ONE OF the greatest guitarists around today. Right up there with Allan Holdsworth. The man shreds with the best of them. I could see EVH choking trying to keep up with these "old men".

Very nice, this one. However, my favorite version of Spectrum is on the New Morning DVD with Culturemix. (I like the version from Live at the Greek as well, but prefer both the New Morning one, and this one)

Bass Player Chick has a great groove, but I just can't dig the tone. Sounds kinda like a synth bass through an AM radio. Otherwise, it's a fantastic video! Thanks for posting. Flame away...

@egyptianminor except this is Billy's band, his choice of musicians and NOT Stanley's. I had the CD and didn't care for it much, especailly THAT cut. Larry Carlton is "smooth jazz" personified and this cut needs cojones. but, that's taste for you.

@TheTimananda Sounds like you didn't REALLY LISTEN to THAT cut, pal. Larry Carlton, may be an overall 'smooth jazz' player, but on that version of Stratus, there's absolutely NOTHING smooth about his solo, It's soulful, blistering, melodic, bluesy and played with a cutting tone. Gambale's a great player, but this 'chops show' doesn't have cojones, per se .Wanna a hear a Gambale solo w/ cojones E carajo? Search for 'Gambale Rattletrap". Peace, Hermano.
