Track 5 from his debut solo album "Spectrum" released in 1973 copyright Atlantic Records. It was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in NYC in two days and was self-produced by Billy Cobham. Cobham was born in Colon, Panama and moved with his family to Brooklyn, NY at the age of three. He came to prominence as the drummer for Miles Davis' band in the late sixties and early seventies. He and guitarist bandmate John McLaughlin left Davis' band to co-found the Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1971 and recruited the best musicians they could find from around the world. One of them was Czechoslovakian keyboardist Jan Hammer, who was Cobham's main collaborator on this first solo album. Leland Sklar, a renowned session musician who was a member of James Taylor's band played bass on four tracks, as did a young guitarist named Tommy Bolin. Cobham met Bolin years before when he was still a teenager performing with his first band Zephyr from Boulder, Colorado. Bolin had just finished recording his first album as a new member of James Gang before he began this side project. His work on this album got him noticed by the members of Deep Purple and he would be hired to replace Ritchie Blackmore in 1975. Since the complete album was recorded in just two days, the finished tracks were the result of one or two takes performed live in the studio with no editing or overdubs added later. As an example, Bolin broke his high E-string while soloing at the 1:46 mark of the song "Taurian Matador" and it's preserved on tape. The album received mostly excellent reviews and is considered a ground-breaking early example of jazz/rock fusion showcasing great musicians mostly improvising their parts to capture the passion and energy usually found only in live performances. It made such a lasting impression on Jeff Beck that he decided to explore fusion himself. He reached out to Jan Hammer to be his collaborator and the result was his classic album "Blow by Blow" released two years later. It was followed by the equally great "Wired" released in 1976. This album reached No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz chart and impressively made it to No. 26 on the Billboard 200 album chart the following year. Written and produced by Billy Cobham.
