I saw Midnight Express in my mid teens and I still have never forgotten it. I have it on DVD in my 'special' collection. That film left a piece in the hearts of those who watched it. It was gut wrenching and I remember a cousin of mine who was living in the States telling us he had heard Billy on a radio interview when he got home and couldn't believe it was him. Brad Davis was an amazing actor ..... The one thing I'll never forget is him down in the lunatic basement walking around the wheel ..... Keep on walking the 'wrong' way Billy and God Bless 🙌

It's 3am here in Istanbul and I watched through this interview in one sitting. I don't even know what to say but I firstly gotta admit Billy Hayes has an INCREDIBLE sense of humour and had fun times! I giggled at a lot of his memories and I low-key wish we could see this side of him as well in the movie instead of the highly forced Turcophobe elements we got. Of course the movie is highly 'respected' by foreign media, but I think a remake version should be filmed staying faithful to what actually happened, and not making things up for the sake of drama. I respect his willpower to escape, many people from the new generations should be aware of such desire and strongwill, but from a new and true-to-what-actually-happened perspective. And his real stories sound very interesting as much as or even more than what happens in the movie, such as how he escaped. It's also amazing how he was called to raise the Turkish flag on 29 October Celebrations (btw, 29 October is not the date of birth of our country's Founding Father Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK, it is the date our country was officially established by him) and he accepted it, mostly it seems to redeem himself and to "balance everything" (the documantary) as he hinted and said, but it takes a lot of courage to do that as people might even think of such act as being mediocre. You know what, this actually made me think Billy Hayes is more Turkish than the "Turks" we have here in Turkiye. For so many Turks wanted to cancel/postpone the latest 29th October Celebrations in 2023, for our country's 100th year anniversary, because of a war or smth happening down somewhere in Canaan as it always has been for the past 3000 years or so... Anyways, really enjoyed watching this interview! I will watch the film again now lol even though it's not realistic as Billy Hayes said many times, but I still appreciate it overall. I also don't hate it as much as others Turks do. Maybe it's because I was expecting a far worse depiction based upon how it was so hated by the Turkish society, and what I saw in the movie didn't even come close to the atrocities I had imagined in my mind that I thought would have been shown (It's not like we are depicted as angels by foreign media everyday!), as USA and some others were pissed off at us for getting Cyprus back again which was rightfully ours. Shame we had to stop the army halfway through. Oh and I should probably get the book if it gets translated into Turkish someday! Tengri'ye ısmarladık! ;)

Billy Hayes - My My, this has to be the best Podcast so far, I've read the book & seen the movie and documentary years ago but still, this was absolutely riveting and was glued to my chair. Made me laugh, made me cry, still have goosebumps. Its nothing short of a miracle that Billy made it out of there and is still around to tell his story, He's an incredibly resilient man and so clever, his smarts, mindset and physical fitness are the champions of this story, don't think any other individual could have succeeded. I bet that never in a million years would he think that he would ever be back in Turkey and inside that Asylum as a free man, he would've most likely had visions of all those tormented men walking around the wheel... Didn't know about the 2 follow-up books, I'll definitely be getting them shortly.

I've not seen it for years, so didn't even remember how it ended, and whether he escaped or not...so was thrilling watching it virtually fresh. Still insufferably claustraphobic and brutal, especially as we know it was based on the reality of Billy's life. But OMG I couldn't peel my eyes away. Especially as I watched it back to back with Escape from Alcatraz, another superb movie with a similar theme. Now I'm going to watch this interview...can't wait to hear Shaun interview Billy.
