WOW! Getting my Billy Taylor fix! Thanks. In the late 80's my parents took me to meet him in some NYC club 'Rose..??' A Master AND a beautiful man.

It's so important to remember that the greatest improvised solos are not a series of fancy patterns dictated by chords (the Gary Burton school of teaching). What's important above all is a knowledge of the breadth and depth of the Great American Songbook--learn as many songs as you can--until you can identify the composer by the use of the bridge (Jerome Kern) or the intervals (Duke Ellington) or the continual permutation of the motif (George Gershwin) or the pervasive use of scales--major and minor--in all of the songs of possibly the greatest composer, Richard Rodgers. The movement from Rodgers to Coltrane then becomes natural and almost obvious, whether it's the scales Rodgers uses with Lorenz Hart or the far different scales he uses with Oscar Hammerstein.

The interpolation of Bach and Rhapsody in Blue is tasteless. This is supposed to be art, not a circus act.
