This fall Becca Stevens will present new music in the vein of the avant-garde pop of Talking Heads and Feist, adding another layer to her unique personal style. In her four-piece band she plays with creative jazz musicians from her habitat Brooklyn. The new songs promise to be open and transparent, a surprising next step after the rich, narrative music of her previous album Regina. On this release she collaborated with major artists such as Laura Mvula, Jacob Collier and David Crosby (of Crosby, Stills & Nash). Regina received unanimous praise, including a five star review in Downbeat.
Becca Stevens was raised in North Carolina and her singing and playing still carries traces of the regional Appalachian folk music, where she accompanies herself on ukulele and lute. In New York she was schooled in jazz and she developed her own style, taking cue from her hero Joni Mitchell. Famous colleagues are in awe of her: Esperanza Spalding, Kurt Elling and José James praise her for her vocal control and her original sound. Becca previously collaborated with Ambrose Akinmusire and is a member of the vocal trio Tillery with Gretchen Parlato and Rebecca Martin.
‘Blessed with a wonderful voice and the ability to craft compelling songs bordering on pop, rock, folk and jazz. The musicality that speaks from every note is astounding’ (Heaven).
