my rough idle and misfires are probably from not doing this, huh! I have used the coils for about a year and I wasn't able to confidently WOT since then. I have been chasing the misfires and the last bit of the puzzle seems to be coming in. Shame on you bimmerlife for not giving me the correct instruction. And thank you Ken for uploading this video. Great info, personally i found i had to file down the red plastic tabs (under the rubber boot you clipped) to get the coil to truly engage the plug with a "click" I had another 5mm to go in depth
@miller330i

Yes, that needs to be done as per Spoolstreets investigation into the coil not seating. File it off to the 2nd ring from the bottom up.

@@stevewatson9255 At 3:34 to 3:40 in the video you can see the red tab peaking through the rubber. There is a depression/ring there that looks like a line. Cut the red tab to that line there.

So if I want to make the switch to these Audi R8 coils, is there a particular brand I should look for?

Eldor

Those coil energy packs look small compared to the Eldor packs that are now available. Wouldn't it make more sense to just get the Eldor energy packs since they are rated up to even the Rolls Royce 600+ hp engines? Eldor part 12138657273 supercedes are previous BMW coils to 2006 and have been shown to be good on N54 boosted to 500+ whp.

Do you still have to modify the coils even if you buy the entire ($480) kit from bimmerlife?
@wedgeperformance2816

If you have a stock valve cover, you need to at a minimum clip the tabs so the coil goes all the way in to snap onto the plug.

Oh I see. You sell the harness only for $300. Or the harness + Coil package for an extra $180, right?

Yes, I think they are the 06E-998-115-E coils. I just know they work extremely well. I put a set in my stock shop car for testing and it ran extremely smooth in comparison to the stock coils.

I used the MHD 2+ map with this coil. Cylinder 1 sometimes misfire after a long time of aggressive driving with high temperature at high rpm (around 6500rpm). Does that modification help?
@WedgePerformance

If you don't clip the tabs and push the coils down on the spark plug, they will arc to the tip of the plug which is wasting energy.

On the BMW n54 the coil doesn't clip to the top of the plug. So clippings them allows you to push them down an extra 1/4 inch to securely attach to the top of the spark plug. On my car without doing this I was getting misfires at about 23 lb of boost. After trimming I had no issues the entire summer running 28 lb of boost
