Beat me to it. I always found flaws with their binding and scraping. I've seen factory guitars with tearout all around the body where they routed for the binding poorly and just stuffed filler in, and on top of that the binding still has cherry finish all over it in splotches. They talk about it like they're experts
I love the vibe here! This shows the skill of the workers, and fosters pride in the production of a fine instrument! This is something that carries over to the Gibson associates and to the customers that are fortunate to own a Gibson! Thanks Gibson!

I wish I could show you how horribly the neck binding on the neck of the SG I described in my first comment truly is. The worker deeply gouged into the binding, and there are little ridges within the depressions, one on the top, the other one on the bottom. I don't think the person who fills out the checklist even looked at it. There was no factory set up, and the binding should not have passed QC. But I'd rather I got the guitar, than to see a video of it being crushed under a front end loader! I'm so disappointed in what I thought would be a great new era for Gibson. Hey, amen dude. Here is my story. From a customer, who paid with hard earned money. I ordered a Gibson SG CME Limited Run. I pre-ordered and received it upon release. When it came, it had the most horrible binding job. The binding was uneven, with varied scrape marks up and down the neck. You could even see fragments of the binding sticking out/peeling off the guitar. Why did I pay for this? And it's a limited run. Wait... so you even had your eyes on a small batch, and this still happened. What the hell. Ok, benefit of the doubt. I return it to exchange with another one. Guess what.. it's WORSE. The binding this time was shifted in toward the fretboard. You can feel (and see) the gap in between the neck and the binding. It almost seemed like a poorly done Chibson. Again, what the hell. I call to just return it, because it seems that this thing called quality control at Gibson is not real.

I just got the Epiphone 2020 59 Les Paul RI with the Gibson specs, and Gibson Burstbuckers, and it is for $712+tax, better than any modern Gibson's I've played. No gaps, no binding issues, fit finish, and a beautiful AAA+ FLAMED VENEER, is so remenicent of a well made Gibson Standard, if you blindfolded me I could not tell the difference. They changed specs from Rosewood, to Indian laurel, but sitting next to my 5 Rosewood boarded guitars, I would swear it's Rosewood!!! Everything screams top notch Gibson, and it was set up perfectly at the factory. My only disappointments are. 1. No COA 2. No truss rod adjustment tool. 3. I can't think of anything else! The action is perfect, the top is awesome, the neck is the first real c shaped hand rolled neck I've seen on an Epi, and is a cross between a '59, and slim '60s neck. I'd rather play this than a 4 to 6K Gibson, it's a nearly perfect guitar I was probably the first pre-order in the US, and one of the first 2 or 3 indivuals to touch one, I WANT MY COA, AND A BLANK BLACK SWITCH COVER, So I can put the medallion away for safe keeping!

My friends sell Gibsons in Saint-Petersburg. They say that in recent years the quality of the finish has become crappy like on chinese guitars and what is worse - the Gibson began to put a chinese bridges. On the new Gibson guitar you can see sometimes a bridge that is already bent. Well, Fender had it's CBS era, seems like it's your turn.

Your second hand info is false. Do you own one, or buy and sell them often? Gibsons use nitro lacquer, some people like it, some don't, but it sure doesn't feel like poly. This hasn't changed with the recent ones. All the recent ones I have seen still have bridges made by API of Nashville TN. This could change of course, I doubt it though. Too many foreign parts and they can't stamp Made in USA on it anymore. The new cases are made in China, they used to be Made in Canada. They switched late 2019 I believe. Quality seems to be pretty good recently, it has been good for as long as I can remember. People just love to rip on Gibson.

@@thephotoyak My friend, I've been playing guitar since '96, the last fifteen years as a professional. At the same time I worked for three years as a luthier, and three years in a music store, selling Gibsons and other brands. I've personally owned three Gibsons, four Fenders, four PRS, two Suhrs (all of these US made), three Epis, some masterbuilds, and countless guitars of my friends and colleagues have passed through my hands over my career. The only guitars that I haven't seen in person are Fenders from the 50s and 60s. Ten years ago things were going well, but now Gibson is just a lost technology. I don't know what they changed, but the quality and craftsmanship has dropped so much that these guitars are just a shame to sell.

The neck is wider than the fretboard binding and that just feels weird on my thumb. My way cheaper 2005 SG doesn’t have that. Is this a 1959 thing they are trying to replicate? Or poor QC?

Scraping binding and wet sanding are my least favorite steps in the guitar building process but if you don't get it right it ruins the final look. My respect and overall attitude with Gibson has me conflicted. With their QC issues over the years it has led me away from the the brand. It was hit or miss with the quality, sound and play ability (tuning issues) with the brand. Then after promoting a Slash guitar which Slash never played but was a Gibson replica made guitar, and yet Gibson profited off of, well, what can I say. Then they start suing companies over body shapes. How desperate can you be! Why because in my opinion they are looking for licence fees. Two of my favorite companies in particular, PRS, which they lost against and now Keisel over their SC and V series guitars. Gibson, stop with this crap, I would love to get into one of your Custom Shop guitars but your business practices are pissing me off.

You pleked it said you could not fix it and sent me a very nice 2016 r9. Very nice you let me pick it from all the bourbon bursts you had at the custom shop. If I had truly understood and known what i have learned i would have sent it to JOE GLASER and happily spent a grand to get MY GUITAR BACK. If you are going to offer lifetime guarantee on an instrument that you build. You should understand we bond with these instruments lust after them for years and pay a hell of a lot of money for them. You should appreciate that and move heaven and earth to return the customer thier instrument. Instead of replacing it like it is a damn stale bag of chips. These are not just guitars your building! They are GIBSON GUITARS and damn it that should mean something. I will forever regret not sending that guitar to a luthier who cared.

Bummer about your guitar. It could have been refretted and fixed. If the fingerboard preparation isn’t right a Plek can’t do jack squat to make it right. They absolutely should have sent the guitar to a competent shop for a refret if they don’t have skilled repair people at the factory. The likely reality is the cost to repair versus replace is what determines the outcome for a corporation in their fiscal position.

dan peabody wished the same when I sent mine back, but at the same time my luthier was gonna charge 800 to repair mine. At that point, I didn’t mind the replacement because my luthier even said that his repair would be so extensive and invasive that he could not guarantee the guitar would be okay. The neck was set in the body poorly(2018 Gibson LP tribute) and that eventually the guitar neck back bowed so much that the neck could not be adjusted. In 2022 and 2023 I bought several "GIBSON LES PAUL STANDARD 50s" guitars, and the quality was very bad...especially the binding works on the neck and body!!! Didn't keep no guitar of these, they all went back to the guitar shop! FUCK...!!!

These Ladies and Guys are real artists! In the whole process of building the guitars the binding scraping is the most fascinating for me. Really amazing how precise and careful this work is done! I will think about it now every time I take my 2010 Custom Shop Les Paul VOS in honeyburst in my hands - and that´s almost every day! Next video to show those people who comment like: "A Gibson guitar is too expensive and not worse the price" - bla, bla bla! Look at this series and you will know WHY a Gibson costs what it costs and if you don´t want to pay for this mostly handmade things - no one forces you! I wanted a Gibson and I bought one - now 5 years later I´m still proud of my "Paula" Greetings from Germany and keep on rising again!

Great comment. Wake with all idiots posting zoomed in photos of minor imperfections. These instruments are hand made! Therefore a 100% perfect guitar with zero flaws, zero imperfections will not exist. And it’s perfectly fine! Lol Gibson make great guitars that just ooze quality. You can literally just feel and sense it when you pick one up. Yet people still whine and complain about tiny microscopic imperfections. Blows my mind.

You guys should work on the finish on the edges of your neck pockets .. pretty sloppy .. at least on the photos at Sweetwater’s guitar gallery when I was considering a black SG , and the serial numbers on the back headstock .. a couple of the numbers had so much paint filling the numbers in you literally couldn’t read the number! Yeah no thanks .. I’m looking at vintage Gibson’s now instead.

I've bought four new original series Gibson this year, kept 3 (2 LP, 1 SG). Each one of them have horrible binding scrapping issues- total amateur craftsmanship. The one I returned had such a messed up truss rod and warped neck that my guitar tech said "send it back, it's beyond repair". Gibson QC push is total propaganda. But they win- I kept three of them so pass me the bounce hat........

I have 30+ guitars. The worst examples of QC comes from MIA Gibson's. One examplel: brand new LP Junior, witchcraft knobs pressed onto the pot shafts at an angle, so they would turn and scrap the body. How could that pass QC? What was the operator thinking of? I had to replace the knobs as the originals had been damaged by forcing them down at an angle of the pot shafts so they could not be reused. Another example: bad dent on the top neck edge - so one would see it all the time. The shop said the guitar came that way. Again: QC? I have other examples. Thanks Gibson!

If there's something I really did not appreciate on my Gibson Les Paul faded was the bad job made by those people who just scraped away at the fingerboard leaving a noticeable gap with the wood of the neck. It feels and looks very cheap and badly made. Overall I love the guitar because it sounds great but this is disappointing when you know I sold my Epiphone that was flawless to buy that Gibson. And I want to laugh when I see this video especially when I read on forums about all these unhappy customers who bought a 4000$ Les Paul Customs and have to deal with crappy bindings and other blemishes.

Still upset at how bad my binding looks on my 2020 Gibson Les Paul Custom. If I had to sell any guitar, this would be the first to go because of the imperfections. What exactly is the problem with the binding?
@michaelsobot
4 жыл бұрын
@@gibsonguitar At frets 1-4, the neck has indents/gouges in the binding giving it a rough feel and appearance in that area. It sort of 'dips' under the neck wood, especially at fret 3 on the underside of the neck. You can feel the gap between the binding and the neck wood on the entire neck, but it becomes inconsistent/rough as you approach the headstock. I assume the guide stick slipped while scraping both sides of the neck, or maybe the stick was too short or not placed far enough down the neck while scraping the area. I'm just speculating. By contrast, my 2004 Les Paul Standard's neck has a smooth transition between binding and neck wood that I can't feel at all. I wish this one felt the same, especially for twice the price. I appreciate the response.

This month I went into a saga of finding a good gibson. First one was a Les Paul Special tribute 2020, it had hair inside of the finish, and a fingerprint finished in the back of the neck. The second one, also Les Paul Special tribute 2020, had a truss rod cover bent, and it sounded really dull. Ok, so I went and bought a full blown 2020 Les Paul Special Yellow TV, the nut was abismal, cut so low, I couldn't play an open high E, the pickup was so wobble, I thought It was not screwed right, but it was, I think the springs were in bad condition. The Binding, it had such a big ledge from the binding to the neck, it look like it was scrapped with a kitchen knife, the truss rod was near of being maxed out(in a 2020 guitar). Absolute garbage. I went to l&m and returned it for a les paul jr, no binding, no springs, les opportunities for Gibson qc issues, this guitar is great now. From all this, I recommend never buy a Gibson online, and if you are going to test one, bring a checklist of things. I love Gibson, but the QC is so bad, you will have more misses than hits when buying one.
