One of my favorite videos thank you for sharing I was an alcoholic past 9 years ago and I cannot tell you enough the harm to you to your body to your family to your love ones to your soul to your spirit The word “Alcohol” comes from the Arabic “al-kuhl” which means “BODY EATING SPIRIT”, and gives root origins to the English term for “ghoul”. In Middle Eastern folklore, a “ghoul” is an evil demon thought to eat human bodies, either as stolen corpses or as children. The words “alembic” and “alcohol”, both metaphors for aqua vitae or “life water” and “spirit”, often refer to a distilled liquid that came from magical explorations in Middle Eastern alchemy.🙏🙏💯💯🔱🔱🧿🧿

Thank you for your comment, and huge congratulations on your sobriety! The combination of root words is a powerful offering, but I think the entomologies of "alcohol" and "ghoul" are not accurate. Both words have Arabic roots, but come from different words in Arabic: "al-kuhul" and "ghul." * "Alcohol" came to be associated with the liquid in the 1540s (early 15c. as alcofol), "fine powder produced by sublimation," from Medieval Latin alcohol "powdered ore of antimony," from Arabic al-kuhul "kohl," the fine metallic powder used to darken the eyelids, from kahala "to stain, paint." The al- is the Arabic definite article, "the." Paracelsus (1493-1541) used the word to refer to a fine powder but also a volatile liquid. By 1670s it was being used in English for "any sublimated substance, the pure spirit of anything," including liquids. "Ghoul" comes from Arabic ghul, an evil spirit that robs graves and feeds on corpses, from ghala "he seized." * Credit -- The fantastic site Etymonline for their research.

I started binging at about 24. I knew right off hand this needed to be a weekend only thing and I stuck to that. Still, drinking fairly heavy twice a week started taking it's toll and it was hard to quit. I quit for certain spans of time like when I got married but would slip back into it for a few years at a time. A few things changed; I no longer got hangovers and wouldn't ever get sick even if I drank way too much. I could drink like a fish but couldn't get that buzzed feeling anymore, instead I would pass out if I had too much. All the fun was gone. I had been praying that I could quit and God heard my prayers. He has a sense of humor you know. I crashed my mountain bike (not while drunk) impaled my leg and thought I was bleeding out. In the ER the doctors said my enzymes were high and asked if I drank. I otherwise wouldn't have known that. The good Lord got my attention about drinking and life in general ... I regret all the wasted time but glad nothing worse came from it.

I like alcohol but my heart breaks for alcoholics. They're in a worse position than other drug addicts. Alcohol is so woven into our society that few people even consider it to be a drug. I don’t drink liquor but if a friend has and ONLY drinks liquor I’ll take shots with them every other round in addition to my beer once I’m drunk I keep drinking just to maintain the drunkness until I fall asleep. In the United States, insurance companies associated with businesses can punish you if you are an alcoholic by raising your rates, declining payouts, or dropping you completely. This causes a disruption to people coming forward to their healthcare providers, as insurance companies can have you release your medical records when you sign up. If this wasn't allowed by insurance companies, more people would seek out help.

I'm 13 months sober. I was a yes on all 11 questions, and the idea of 5 drinks constituting a binge struck me as faintly comedic - 5 drinks was a warm-up! 400-ish aa meetings & 12 steps later, I look 15 years younger, no longer hate myself and look forward to playing my guitar 🎸, seeing my girlfriend, making myself useful, hanging with other sober members and helping still suffering alcoholics. In contrast, a year-and-a-bit ago, I was looking forward to having the unbearable hassle of being alive taken away by continuing to drink, because I could envision no other future.

I consider a binge drinker as one who goes out once in a while and really ties one on. Maybe this happens now and then when he or she goes out with friends bar hopping and such. There are no cravings involved. To me, if you start craving alcohol every 5 days or so, and you generally give in to those cravings and get toasted, then you're an alcoholic. If you drink every day and get up in the morning after drinking and start again, then you're a RAGING alcoholic.

Okay, seek professional help. Right. That costs lots of money IF you can even find a professional who can take you on. There is no money for help and AA isn't much help; it even turns some off and leaves them to drink even more for the failure.

Okay. What if I do not drink to get drunk or to get a buzz? I exercise the discipline and willpower to drink only 1 shot of single malt Scotch whiskey daily for its scientifically proven health benefits? Would you agree that this is the best "healthy moderation"?

My daughter is a binge drinker and I'm concerned. She is in denial, I don't know what to do and I'm worried. She doesn't drink everyday but looks forward to when she can and when she does, she gets drunk, it's never one drink, it's I'm getting drunk period.

I'm like her I binge once a week, And I lokk forward to my next benders. I'm not in denial though, I know I have a problem. And I drink to get wasted. My parents don't care, My mom doesn't like it, but she doesn't confront me. I just can't stay sober at least a week. I want to stop, but I can't. After a few days I start to overthink and then I drink to ease it.

You can drink a gallon of whiskey every day for the rest of your life and you will never break my record. I retired from all forms of alcohol 7 years ago so that there would be enough booze left for you to drink. So drink heartily my friend; I will stay in the Sober lane for the rest of my life.

I drank an 18 pack of natural light cans 16 consecutive days per month for 3 and a half years. The other 14 days per month were my prescribed adderall days. Got away with it for 3 years and 3 months but the final 3 months i very abruptly stopped getting away with it. Turned on me big time. Im committed to never drinking again. Ever. I accept that sometimes i have failed on that but i then try harder each time. Have been doing great for 2 months

Awesome how certain 'older' videos can be such a vital source of information and support! Hi, I'm Timber, and I'm an alcoholic with 20 months into recovery. I am a 52 year old woman. I was a hardcore binge-drinker for many years: 1-2 pints of vodka every other day. I was drinking alone, at home. Drinking seemed to take away all my cares for hours at a time. Then came the next day, and that never failed to be just bad in every possible way. On July 7, 2020, I wound up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning. I almost died. A nurse came in the next day to ask me if I was ready for free help to recover. "YES." My mom broke down crying and said "Thank God!" She had been asking me to do this for a very long time. I spent 3 weeks in McCambridge Rehab for Women in Columbia, Missouri. I was determined to make this work for myself (that is important), and did everything they wanted me to do: up at 5:00am for a shower, a smoke, breakfast, then 10 classes a day (I tried really hard not to sleep in class, but I did doze off 2-3 times :/ ). I was put in charge of the kitchen, so I had to keep it clean, dishes done, no old food in the fridge, trash out, floors clean. By bed time around 11pm, I was exhausted and fell into bed. Every minute of being there was WORK, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. But I DID it. I got that bead ceremony at my 'graduation'. I walked out of there with every tool ready-to-use. In the past 20 months, I have used them all at one time or another. I now live sober, with full knowledge that I am able to live life sober. I am a different person, a better person, and I'm eternally grateful and humble. Thank you for reading this. Maybe my words will touch someone out there who really needs them.

@@timberwolf5631 congratulations on your sobriety, every day is a major accomplishment! I felt the exact same way you did. Incomprehensible demoralization every single day. I’m 49 from Northeast Missouri. I got sober this May after I ran out of choices. Three trips to the ER, that last in an ambulance. One for alcohol poisoning and two for falls. One day I was just a regular social/professional drinker with it all under control the next im laying on the floor bleeding out. My liver enzymes were at very dangerous levels. I had turned into another person. One that no one understood but me. I got sober not in rehab but in those recovery rooms where they pass the basket. Either way I did it. Most all of my friends that still drink have stood by me maybe not fully understanding but I don’t waste their time and my time trying to describe it to them unless they ask. I drank over a pint a day during the week, all day long fifth or more on the weekends. At the end I was drinking in the middle of the night and even before work. 208 days sober today, no looking back. The only thing that can get in the way is me.

@@Jerid58 EXCELLENT!!! I'm four hours southwest of you, at the Lake. Missouri is a great place to be sober with all of its natural beauty and fresh air. It takes an extraordinary amount of inner willpower to get sober and stay that way, no matter what. I am happy that both of us will be spending our holidays outside of a coffin.

@@timberwolf5631 About three hours from the lake. We have a vacation home there on the west side. I go to meetings there in the summer, there is a really awesome group there. I’ve even went two times in one weekend if I’m around enough drunk people. I go there knowing it’s all around but still it can get on your nerves. Giving up the alcohol gave me back so many things I had been missing I can’t even count them all.
