March 2024 marks the 250th anniversary of Bingley Five Rise Locks, classed by the Canal and River Trust as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Waterways’. These staircase locks, on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, are the steepest in the UK and still in frequent use by boaters today.
The locks were captured on film in 1959 by Jack Eley, a keen amateur filmmaker from Leeds, as part of his travelogue ‘Yorkshire Curiosities’.
