just for information if anyone is interested: the reason why with this method you dont need to cover the expanding foam with silicone is because it is the pond and animal safe one. The "normal" way to do this is to let the foam cure, scrape/ cut off the upper layer so that silicon will stick and then seal it all with it, so that water will not wash out any possible chemicals out of the foam. Both methods work, but if you do it the way shown here, nou NEED the fish safe foam.

Sure, but you’re aware that most expanding foams are safe when fully cured even if not “animal specific” right? , you just need to rinse it 2 or three times by spraying it before making the rest of the enclosure

@@nickdesjardins5987 The reason is marketing. The same way people say "reptile thermostats" are better than regular thermostats when it's purely marketing. Slap an animal logo/branding/name on it and double the price, smart business really

@@nickdesjardins5987it's also the same reason we have safety warning on everything. People will drink bleach and eat tide pods. They will also put animals in the enclosure while it's curing or put them straight into the contaminated water that was never rinsed.

Do you think an enclosure could also as look good without the sphagnum moss? Also is the silicone necessary for a humid tank (like one with poison dart frogs)? Btw I love these video's, I'm going to use this method for sure!

Even if you “mess” this up you can scrape it off with a razor blade. Some people will get a cheap can of the original cream colored foam and practice on some cardboard first. Remember plants will cover up your mistakes in a matter of months.

It's best not to cohab cresties. I didn't know this when I got my first 2 tiny babies at an expo. I put them together and ended up really lucky that they were both female. They have been together for going on 6 years now. I have never put 2 together again after that because it could very well have ended in disaster had they both been males.

🤣 I don’t sell Great Stuff foam. I buy it and use it because I like it best. You can absolutely use the cream colored foam, I did for years. The black foam is easier to hide, you don’t see it from the sides, and I don’t have to use silicone all over the top like you do with the standard type. I’m all about people doing it different ways. This is just what I have found to work best for me and I enjoy sharing my process.

Why didn’t you just use the foam? Was the silicone needed, first?

It’s to create more texture for the foam to adhere to. You can add it directly to the glass but it’s likely to peel off in one piece down the road.
