“Thanks for your help, man.” Loved that! You’re the first biochar tutorial I’ve watched that mentions porosity of the base material. That’s good to know. If wood were the component, which species would you recommend for greater porosity? Would a lighter wood such as white birch be more porous than oak, for example? Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I really enjoy your presentations.

From what I have read the temperature during the process has a greater impact to the porosity than does the type of feedstock used. The best type of feedstock is that which is free, abundant and requires the least amount of handling. I don't have a great answer for which material would yield greatest porosity however porosity ranges from the visual to the microscopic. All of which will be useful habitat for the microscopic world. Thanks for the question. 👊

Thank you for the reply. I’ve got plenty of free feedstock and will be availing myself of it!

I shovel mine into a chipper shredder. Works great, but one problem I have is if it's too wet it clogs the machine. To remedy this I alternatively chip wood which clears out the wet mess. I end up with a nice pile of fine wood chips and biochar.

Nice. The chipper shredder would be a nice piece of kit. I would shred everything in sight!

I bought the wood chipper from harbor freight and it is crap for chipping wood but great for grinding biochar.

Sounds like a great use for piece of crap. I didn't know harbor freight sold chippers. Depending on pricing I may be interested in one for shredding biomass. 👍

Are you using any of your biochar for water treatment (filtration)...?
@therealprtrhsenteal

Not specifically for our drinking water but I do use char in livestock watering troughs for filtration and as a way to pre-load the char before it goes into compost. Using it as a water filter would be an interesting experiment if I could figure out how to quantify results.

@@therealprtrhsenteal - From my own experience, Biochar makes an excellent water filter, especially if you apply water/steam to the hardwoods in the firing process...
