Biogeochemical cycle: Bio: Living, Geo: Earth (abiotic), Chemical: Nutrient, Cycle: Path
Biogeochemical cycle refers to the movement of essential elements like N, C, O, P and S between abiotic and biotic components. The atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere are the abiotic components of the ecosystem.
Two types of biogeochemical cycles found in ecosystem.
1. Gaseous cycle: Reservoir in the atmosphere (air). These cycles involve the exchange of elements between the atmosphere and living organisms. N, C, O, H cycle.
2. Sedimentary cycle: Reservoir in the earth’s crust. These cycles involve the movement of elements between the lithosphere and living organisms. P, S, Ca cycle.
