Bipolar Disorder steals from you. To live with Bipolar is to lose things.... people, family, jobs, financial security, dreams, independence, milestones, you name it Bipolar will steal it from you. That's why it's so important to take medication, it works. I've been on it 7 years and it helped me get through the death of my dog without going to far into psychosis. The medication helped me to realize I needed to hospitalize myself. One unfortunate thing about Bipolar Disorder is that we have to have an episode in order to be diagnosed. We have to suffer until it gets really bad and then if we are lucky we get the right diagnosis. If we are lucky we find a medication without side effects or with minimal bareable side effects. (example: I'm sensitive to sunlight so I wear sun glasses).
I can't ever verbalize the pain Bipolar Disorder inflicts upon us even after we recieve a diagnosis it is still a daily struggle. We have to contantly check in with ourselves. Take extra care of our bodies. We have to have plans for what happens if we do get sick such as a prerecorded message to yourself explaining your illness to your psychotic self in the future should you have an episode. Consistently monitor our medication with our psychiatrist. It's not easy.
BUT we have a lot of stuff in our lives to be grateful for that fact that we are still alive..a lot of us do not make it out the other side. We have extra special people in our lives because we know they will be there for us should things go south. We have a lot of moments that haven't happened yet and while we may lose some very important life milestones we can choose to focus on the future moments we don't know about yet. The flashbacks suck but we learn to deal with them and come out stronger each time.
