I love your videos! This one isn't quite as clear as your others though. I think what it is is that you describe some potential symptoms, then after going over Bipolar 1 and 2, then you kind of talk about diagnostic criteria. But without specifying that you can actually meet the criteria for Bipolar 1 with only a single manic episode and no history of depressive mood at all (even thought thats probably not the normal course of progression). Another caveat is that if a person requires hospitalization, the required duration of 1 week of manic symptoms (with at least 3 of the characteristic symptoms that you described) is mute and no longer required. I appreciate your ability to simplify, but in this case I think there was a little clarity and specificity that was missing that you have most of the time. Keep up the awesome work, I learn a ton from your videos!!

Thanks for the video. It is great! I have question. I have been checking the DSM V, but it seems to me that bipolar I disorder needs at least 1 manic episode, but not necessarily a major depressive episode. “The manic episode may have been preceded by and may be followed by hypo manic or major depressive episodes” It is the bipolar II that needs at least 1 major depressive episode + at least 1 hypomanic episode. Am I missing something? Thanks for the attention

Hi, don't worry, you're not missing anything, it's correct that Bipolar I can be diagnosed once all criteria for a manic episode are met, even if the person has no lifetime history of a major depressive episode. As you've noted a depressive episode is not a requirement for a diagnosis of Bipolar I, because it may occur after the manic episode, or not at all, and the person can still receive the diagnosis. I think I wasn't clear enough when saying that we also see depressive episodes in Bipolar I. The DSM states that most patients with Bipolar I also experience a depressive episode, but I didn't mean to imply that this was a requirement for a diagnosis, just that it's very common in Bipolar I. My apologies for any confusion, thanks for commenting!
