It's Midwinter here in Scotland and Hemp the dog and I set forth to show you the so called 'Swiss army knife' of mushrooms the Birch Polypore. (Piptoporus Betulinus, Fomitopsis Betulina)
We show you how to identify the mushroom, how to prepare a medicinal tea from it, make a wound bandage, how to sharpen your knife with it, make an Ötzi mushroom necklace and how It can be used to make fire! It really is the mushroom that can do it all. Every forager and bushcraft enthusiast should add the Birch Polypore to their library.
In terms of this mushroom's medicinal benefits it has been shown to have compounds that are 'antibacterial, antifatiguing, immunoenhancing, and soothing' according to one research paper. The Birch Polypore was also found on the body of Ötzi the iceman who may have been using it to treat the intestinal parasite called Whipworm. It also showed promise in decreasing tumour proliferation in rats without any toxicity to the rats. The mycologist Paul Stamets has also filed a US patent including this mushroom, showing that the compounds can prevent and treat 'Poxyiridae and Orthopox viruses, flu viruses including bird flu (H5N1), SARS and Hepatitis C (HCV), as well as infections from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli'. SARS is of course a type of coronavirus which shines an interesting light on this mushroom in our current world.

Disclaimer:
Concerning the folk tea remedy, I am in no way recommending the mushroom to be used in replacement of clinical medical interventions. Do not make this tea if you are not 100% certain you have the Birch Polypore, some mushrooms can be very poisonous. If you decide to consume it please only try a very small amount to make sure you don't develop any allergic reactions or gastric upset.
