I think the RSPB could raise funds by running an online course in identifying birds by song. I would definitely sign up for it!

A good start to our more common wood and garden birdsongs: he didn't comment on the woodpecker drumming as he entered his patch. Such a charcteristic sign of spring as they drum out their presence either as a warning to others or as a note to possible mates (or both!).

I agree, I'm trying to get back into birdsong. This selection is ideal for me to relearn them all again.

The Merlin app is great for learning birdsong. It records sounds and tells you live which bird it can hear. Its very accurate too, would highly recommend for people wanting to learn how to id birds by their song

I have a male Blackbird singing every morning at 0515hrs just outside my window. A flute and sharp tappings. The best alarm ever produced. I was amazed how Beautiful a Robin song was too. Thrush is similar to a Blackbird for me anyway, Wrens and long tailed tits have a really high pitched note. Brilliant

Often you cannot see the bird that is singing or it is silhouetted against a bright sky. It means you can only know it is there when it sings. I have found that blackbirds make different sounds for different things.

Thanks for this. I often identify a birds by hearing it before I see them (eg long tailed tits. I know quite a few birds I hear regularly but would like to brush up on it so keep the recordings coming with the adult expert!!

Isn't the monotonus whistle-like call at 4:40 a common chiffchaff?

Bird song very faint in comparison with the speaker's voice, so it's difficult to hear the birdsong without being deafened by the speaker.

Hi Alana, I use a Sennheiser ME66 gun mic that I mostly have for shooting interviews. There's a lot of fun stuff going round just now on twitter about making your own parabolic mic with a mixing bowl!
