Anyone who steps out on to the stage and gives their all should be respected. With the ability, professionalism, & mastery that Bireli Lagrene has achieved, what can you really say other than, Way to go, great job, WOW!!! Things you would never say. I think you missed that third note.

his playing is really sloppy, takes lots of risks and fall, show-off playing. has a good head for music, brilliant, but his playing is choppy. John McLaughlin does similar, like he is chopping through a jungle with a machete. But mcLaughlin has written some good works as a music writer.

I remember being in the big tent, not so far from the stage. I think he came on stage and said in a very shy way"Hello, my name is Birelli lagrène, and he started playing. That day I understood a lot more about jazz guitar, and especially that you don't have to play always fast to make it swing. He was excellent at playing the medium tempo heads...Just because he has an electric guitarist technique as well.

Bireli see all the music in a song and play just what the song needs. Bireli's phrasing is unique, when Govan's phrasing is kind of a melting pot of all the "modern" phrasing...And Bireli shouldn't be compared to Django....Bireli has his own style, he begun playin' Django's music, but i think he's pretty bored about people always asking him to play Gypsy jazz...like he said, he just want to play music...but people likes labelled music...

I'm not saying Metheny is untalented, I'm just saying that it's an easy listening music and cheap show done with cheap tricks such as this picasso guitar, which is purely a stage trick comparable to laser rings and fans used by Steve Vai. Besides, I truly believe that Lagrene is a genius, while Metheny is just merely decent jazz guitarist playing easy music to listen so we shouldn't compare those two guys.
@YoshiTRoN1
2 жыл бұрын
I have to whole heartedly disagree. I get what you’re saying, but Pat has never, and never will, use a tool in a way that ISNT to the best of his ability. The Picasso guitar is flashy, sure, but you better believe he plays with pure soul and dedication every time. Why else would he keep it in that good of shape for decades? The orchestrion project from Pat. You could argue it’s “gimmicky” but when you realize what it is, it’s truly a deeper dive into another outlook on music and how it exists. No musician to this DAY has done anything like it. Metheny pushes the envelope over and over. The same way Herbie Hancock, or Chick Corea, or Miles did. Otherwise you stay playing the same music and you end up like Wynton Marsalis. Metheny has many project where he takes a concept, theme or cultural influence and maximizes it’s potential for the best musical result. As do many modern jazz artists. Even Herbie. Next you’ll say Herbie Keytar is a stage trick. I’m just saying man, I’m not putting you down for your opinion. But when you listen to smooth jazz they play on radio stations versus what the masters can do, you’d be surprised. And I do consider Metheny a master. He’s played with the best there is. I guess some people don’t like change. Like Wynton. Seriously, “Speaking of Now”, “Imaginary day” dude…. “The Way Up”!!!!! That’s some of his best stuff!! It’s been out since 2005 man!! Saying that the Picasso is a stage trick comparable to a LITERAL stage trick is a joke. I pray you open your horizons to different play styles and compositions. And maybe get more into someone’s music before you call their entire discography “easy listening”. Peace.

@highlandbrian I've been playing for 40 years and have never heard anyone come close to Birili's genius. He is the Oscar Peterson of the guitar. McLaughlin and Metheny have the highest respect for him. Including Joe Pass who I studied with. Django's son Babik thought that Birili was as good if not better than his father. You have no discernment nor respect for your elders. I suspect your projecting your own CRAP onto Birili. You must have had some horrible s--t happen to you. . .

This concert was absolute magic: Birelli wasn't famour at the time and looked very shy that day. After a song or two(probably these two), he introduced the musicians and said in a very shy manner "and my name is Birelli lagrène". Seems he didn't have an amp on stage and played straight into the PA, so his sound was excellent on heads and a bit sloppy on fast runs. A magical time

Rather you like this or not, it should be respected that anyone who can devote this much of their life to master an instrument is amazing. The discipline and passion alone it takes to stick with anything let alone the talent is a gift. This should not be criticized. My original four core jazz guitarists were: Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, John McLaughlin, and Larry Coryell. I met and almost played with Larry. A great guy! Shortly thereafter, he passed. Since then, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Stowell, Jess Van Ruller, Szymon Mika, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Misha Mendelenko, Mike Moreno, Lage Lund, Jonathan Kreisberg, Nelson Veras, and Gilad Hekselman have been my major inspirations.

It’s annoying when it took a “week” to the camera notices that someone else than the star is doing the solo. It’s so common. People have difficulty to understand music as art, rather than as entertainment, and what a band is. It’s a bunch of guys that make part of a whole, everyone as part of same thing. But prevails in common sense this stupid notion of star. Bireli is not a star; he is a MUSICIAN in the best sense of the word. One of my preferred. Great track, loved it.
