Al mazing Di Meola. He was flawless on this. He speed changes in the middle of a run are breath taking. From fast to real fast then can slow it down and finish with some bends. But lets not knock Bireli. It is a show, he can show off if he wants. When I saw them I was glad they showed off.

No need to compare these two. Bireli's music is organic, Al di Meola is a great player but he is just full of maths.

Fabrizio was born of Greek and American Indian parents 33 years ago, adopted by Hungarian gypsies. At the age of 3 months he was playing all of Django's tunes. In the last 30 years he has evolved expotentialy as a guitarist. He is a enigma shrouded in a mystery. Unknown to the general public, is reputed to be a billionaire, but most notable is the fact that he is considered by knowledgable musicians as the "second coming", Django being the first. Fabrizio will be knighted later this year.

@metalhead654 Since Paco is a Flamenco guitarist, he automatically "owns" these p...uh, I mean players, from a technical perspective since Flamenco is technically the most difficult style to play. However, harmonically and speed-wise, I wouldn't say he has much of an advantage, if any, over these guys. You've seen the clips of the "original" Super-Trio with McLaughlin, Di Meola and Paco, right?!? Then it shouldn't be a mystery how it would sound with Paco in the mix...

No videos, recordings or pictures are available, since Fab shuns all publicity. He wants to maintain his status as the "greatest unknown guitarist". Prefering to stay in seclusion, he only make infrequent appearances at the annual Boise Boy's Club Seafood and Furniture Expo. He is also developing edible guitars to send to third world countries.

if all youre lookin for here is who you think is showing off picking speed (which probably isnt even the case in the first place), then you are paying attention to the wrong thing completely. cant believe anyone would have the audacity to try and critique some of the greatest and most technically advanced guitarists alive today

they are all great, but dimeola is my fav..he just has those signiture fast energetic runs picking every note, also he's got that unique string attack style and he's bloody good composer too...to this day I measure all the guitrists in the world by how close they are to Al's level playing..Al is the PERFECTION, super composer/guitarist and musician all in one package..long live Al :)

On Lagrene's first solo, it sounded like he was trying too hard to out-do Di Meola speed-wise, and didn't quite nail those fast runs as accurately as he intended.

There is no"out doin"with Bireli ever!Al Di Meola on the other hand is more of a "show of dude"which is cool sometimes.
dont forget guys that at 0.56 its 'rio ancho' from Paco De Lucia !!the fantastic piece, and all the chords suite ( even the beginning )come from the usual spanish chords suite comes for the most part from Paco de Lucia not al di meola . indeed Al composed a beautiful intro !;

@gosiman Al has been one of my heroes since the days of RTF, but I think he's a little limited in a way. Not once have I seen Al play anything resembling "traditional" Jazz on an electric archtop, such as Langrene and Coryell can obviously do. Al somehow performs a disappearing act whenever strait-up Jazz on archtops is next on the set-list. It's no wonder those Jazz duets with Langrene and Coryell were duets, and not "trio's" lol

to tell someone that their musical opinion is incorrect doesn't seem fair to me. I personally didn't like the video. i don't like how busy the solos get. but that's my opinion. and because music is a personal taste, it rules out the idea of right and wrong.

Ovation of different generations I sure won't argue about playing: Al is clearly playing his repertoire while Birelli sits in...Ovation of different generations... the funny thing is the difference in sound: Bireli has a much more natural sound while Di Meola's won't allow him to play slow. Ovations were the first electro acoustic guitars available and had a very distinctive look. The sound was...what it was, very clicky!

Well I guess since "Al Di" wrote the music he can do whatever he likes. Never heard of Bireli before this, but I probably won't if this is representative of his playing. As for "growing musically" Birelli would give his left nut to have written this supremely melodic and fantastic piece, whereas Al can play the lines in his sleep because the fans will always want to hear it.

"guess who is playing music and who is showing off picking speed?" That all depends on the taste and convictions of the listener. To me at least, Al and Bireli are doing a little of both. To those who don't possess that level of alternate picking skill, both are just showing off picking speed. In practically all cases, this conclusion was driven by jealousy. To non-musicians who voted "showing off," then it is fair to assume that SRV or Metallica is more of their "speed" (pun intended).
