Zürich Tech is a new iteration of Zürich.
Zürich was launched in 1964 as a closed sandal. It was only the second product in which the iconic BIRKENSTOCK footbed was integrated. The year before, Madrid, the one-strap sandal, had been launched as the
brand’s first-ever sandal.
Contrary to popular perception, Zürich was not an evolution of Arizona, the two-strap open sandal, which launched in 1973, nine years after Zürich. 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of this important, uniquely designed product. Zürich Tech, therefore, represents a contemporary update to a sandal that was a key step forward for the brand, both in terms of design and execution.
For BIRKENSTOCK, Zürich represented a dynamic vision of a future in which the iconic BIRKENSTOCK footbed could be integrated into people’s daily lives in a more utilitarian manner. The very minimal design of MADRID did not lend itself to every seasonal or occupational context. Zürich, on the other hand, with its sturdy leather upper, facilitated a much more versatile application of
the footbed. Zürich Tech thus seeks to evoke a similar, utilitarian
vision of the future.
Zürich Tech’s innovative design features ski-boot style fixings in place of the traditional steel BIRKENSTOCK buckle, as well as a light and sturdy EVA outsole. The product comes in simple, eye-catching colorways. The aesthetic that the design of the product evokes is retro-futuristic.
