This is a superb video proving conclusively many things that we have all heard of over the years. Sounds like a train? Check. Stays on the ground for long distances? Check. Thanks man. I’ve been wondering for so long about the hilly terrain piece and am still baffled by it. In the 17 years we’ve lived here we’ve never had one come over the mountain before. I theorized that this had something to do with the air pressure over the mountains (I know they’re just hills, but they are named Mountains so I refer to them that way). Still, there’s a little lull coming down from the crest and we live on the upward slope of that little lull as it rises then falls to the valley below. There was virtually no damage in the lull area, but tremendous damage on the other side and on down into and across the valley. I’m pretty sure that what I perceived as a train sound was a combination of the wind through the trees and the cacophony of things breaking and getting hit simultaneously.

Sure. We live in Newnan and the F4 that came through here a couple weeks ago missed us by about 4 miles. Midnight no less and no basement. Anyway we live in hilly terrain similar to yours and I've seen enough. A tornado WILL follow the terrain. My neighbor just got a tornado shelter installed and we may too. We also have about two acres in Gatlinburg and even in that area on should always have a safe place to go.

@emmettturner9452

@@erko78 Yes, it was the only EF-4 in Georgia for the last 11 years so you are right: they definitely aren’t common here. Newnan Georgia is particularly well known for its historic homes that are hundreds of years old, many of which are now severely damaged, so obviously extreme weather doesn’t happen often for so many houses to last that long. “City of Homes?” Maybe not anymore after 1,700+ of them were damaged or destroyed. :( I not only took a direct hit, but I took a direct hit from the strongest part of it’s 38.9 mile track. You see, mine was the exact neighborhood where they confirmed it was EF-4 after one of my neighbors had no walls left standing (Arlington Court in Woodrow Place) along with another home on the other side of the tree line on Fairview Lane (the two red spots on the NWS map). They calculate given the building codes on these newer houses that it would’ve taken at least 170MPH winds to remove them from their foundations and, thus, you get two red spots on the NWS map and a confirmed EF-4. Of course, the tornado varied from half a mile to a whole mile wide, and even the low estimate meant I was inside the vortex as it wrecked those particular houses. As the first house in the neighborhood from the direction of the tornado, it hit me first. I was South, South-East of those two houses and the tornado was traveling East, North-East. We had a Nest camera setup but we don’t have any footage of the tornado itself because of the power and Internet outage moments before. We never got a before/after comparison because it was taken out by a tree and Internet was never restored. Power was out for a week so it would not have shown the immediate aftermath anyway. I did upload the final moments of footage if you are interested. Though I was unable to capture the initial impact on video both my brother and I managed to record some of the event on our phones as we were taking shelter. You can find them on my channel. We sheltered behind the foundation wall halfway to the basement and went there as soon as the power went out. It was hitting us moments later (

Well I'm glad you survived with no damage or injuries! So so lucky it only skirted around you and didn't plow right into you! Tornadoes are insane forces of nature and I have the most respect for them. Ironically I do know exactly what it feels like to have a tornado drop out of the sky on top of you. I survived a water spout touching down basically right on top of my head last summer (I live at the beach). We were out kayaking to the local island across the waterway and a hellish cyclops of a storm blew up out of no where. Went from clear skies to zero visibility in about 2 minutes. No wind to 90-100mph+ in less than seconds. Hail the size of golf balls and freezing rain that was whipping so hard it felt like razor blades. The temp dropped from 89° to 41° I could see my breath! Absolutely the most terrifying and intense experience of my life. The worst part? I had my children with me! And let me tell you how much the experience changes when you have your offspring suddenly in extreme danger like that. I went into "supermom" mode (I really have no other way to describe it) and hauled my 55lb child across an oyster ridden mudflat the size of a football field to the closest low lying covered area to basically bury her in the sand and go back for the others. And the craziest part? I didn't hear a sound, but apparently I was demon screaming the entire 3 trips back and forth across the mudflat. And that 55lb child weighed nothing, like I was carrying air. My feet didn't touch the ground I never felt a single bit of that mud flat between my toes, nor did I get cut or wounded either somehow. It felt like time stopped! The thing blew through in a couple minutes but having that cyclonic beast roaring right on top of us like that made it feel like it lasted an entire lifetime. After it had rushed out to sea, my kids were in shock and couldn't function, our kayaks had blown half a mile down the waterway, and we still had to retrieve the damn kayaks and get them nearly a mile back up the beach to the ramp! Reflecting on it now I honestly think my instinct to save my children is the ONLY reason we survived at all, because if we had stayed face down out on that mudflat we would have undoubtedly been swept right up into that thing because it was LITERALLY right on top of us. We were inside the outer band of it! I can only hope we NEVER get caught like that ever again EVER. And my kids and I still have nightmares about it to this day. 😰😱☠

@@victoriaharman4653 Holy crap! My only fear in life is for the safety of my “kids” who are 20 & 24. I’ve walked into an oyster bed before, so lucky your feet didn’t get shredded like mine. Worst part was that you were suddenly on it and everywhere you turned there were more. It ripped my feet open like walking on razor blades. I grew up near the Gulf of Mexico and frequently saw water spouts off shore, but never was in one. This storm was moving at 45 MPH so it was practically gone in seconds. I’m glad all turned out well for you & yours Mama Bear. ;-)

@@seanmahoney3749 omgs yes! The oyster beds are typically the equivalent of yards and yards of razor blades. We have miles and miles of marshland here so there are oyster beds littering this coast. Everywhere you look. Seriously. And the tourists come in and have not a clue and turn their kids loose out there. I can't tell you how often I see kids getting carted off to the er because they wandered their way into a big oyster bed and got shredded to pieces. Makes me hurt! I am so sorry you ever had the misfortune of finding yourself walking barefoot into one for sure. I'd rather eat glass than ever experience that again! And it really does still blow my mind that somehow, in the middle of one of the strongest forces of nature, I navigated one the size of a football field not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES without a scratch. I must have been floating/flying. It is physically impossible otherwise and that's the only thing that makes sense. I left my body or became superhuman or something like that. My kids were 8, 7, and 3 at the time this happened. My youngest weighed all of 31lbs. If her father had lost hold of her I doubt we would have ever found her. I cringe at the thought of it constantly. And the older 2 are so scarred by the entire experience that they second they see clouds they don't want to leave the house. It's been a struggle teaching them since then that you can't leave in fear. You just have to always be prepared and ready for anything. A very tough lession to learn at 8 and 7 years of age let me tell you. 😥 Side note: your house is in a really pretty neighborhood. All the houses looked very sturdy. First of all, awesome video, you’re a steely-eyed tornado man. I must say though, what you did is unquestionably reckless bordering on suicidal, James Spann would chew your ass for that move lol. The storm was moving 45-55mph, you would not have had time to duck inside, when you said “HOLY SHIT” was your last chance, after that it was divine providence alone. But you lucked out: The damaging winds that hit across the street actually wasn’t the tornado because winds were right-to-left (anti-cyclonic). That was most likely rear-flank downdraft getting sucked back into the updraft, which in a system as brutal as that one can easily produce 80-100+ winds. I tracked this monster on radar for abt 2 hrs, it was definitely a standard cyclonic supercell. But you were still insanely close.
@seanmahoney3749
3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I had never been that close before so didn’t know exactly what was going on other than Spann saying it was crossing 280 just before the power went out then I went outside to see what I could see. From that point on I was captivated. It was practically over after I said “...HOLY SHIT”. Thanks for the education on what I was actually witnessing. The wind was initially much lower and in the opposite direction. I suspect there were multiple vortexes within the system based upon the damage down the street and around the neighborhood. Some trees showed signs of twisting and there were many trees felled in different directions. I was initially hesitant to send to Spann (as my son suggested) because he does get upset about these things when people get hurt or killed as demonstrated earlier in his broadcast that day. Ultimately I distilled it down to the 1:30 version that I sent Spann & 33/40 and they posted on their FB page.

@@seanmahoney3749 Yeah it takes tons of studying radar, training, and experience to know what’s going on in these storms, there are so many different features to look at, they’re all doing different things but look similar, and it’s generally just disorienting unless you really know your stuff. You nailed the key moment though: when the winds change direction. Typically when you’re close but not in rain: you’re in the “inflow” region. Wind is getting pulled into the storm and lofted into the updraft, like a vacuum. Inflow winds can be weak or strong, depends. If you’re looking at the storm and the wind is at your back, that’s inflow. Here’s the key moment: When wind dies down and things get really still. Now you’re danger-close, because you’re in the updraft (typically 1-3 miles across). It gets still because wind goes from horizontal to vertical. You can feel the pressure drop (it’s very eerie) and ears sometimes pop. Then (best-case) the winds change direction from inflow to outflow. Worst-case you get hit by a tornado :) Makes sense you saw twisting in the trees, that close to a violent tornado, all the winds are rotating violently, and might have been some sub-vortices very very close to you. Like 50ft close, you were absolutely as close as it gets.

Thank you. It was very much a tornado. An EF3 to be exact. It was not what I expected based upon what I had seen online prior or in movies. It lacked the shape or visual definition I had expected, but that’s because it was a multi-vortex wall type tornado from what I understand. If you watch the Aftermath video on my channel you’ll see the extent of the major damage that occurred just a couple hundred feet away and for a large section of the neighborhood. There was additional extensive damage in another part of the neighborhood that I will post soon.

I remember hearing James Spann say that subdivision name as the Live ABC 33/40 was monitoring the tornado. I think Spann lives in that area over near Oak Mountain. To hear someone broadcast a tornado and say it was in the area of there home. Make it all surreal. Glad his wife was all right and property.

Thank you. It was a fully formed EF3 tornado that had been on the ground already for about 30 miles & about 45 min. I was watching the track on TV until the power went out as they said it was approaching the area where we live. I went out to see what I could see and was expecting to see something with much more definition, but it was a wedge shaped storm apparently that doesn’t have the same common appearance. It’s size & strength was somewhat diminished when it hit our neighborhood, but all were not spared damage. Just 2 houses away people’s roofs were blown off and/or damaged. Approximately 50 homes sustained major damage and the tree loss was huge. We’ve lived here for 17 years and never had this much damage. It will take years to rebuild & recover.

Wow a cat 1 or more depending how close over you it was? if that wide tornado with some semi vortexes was a fijita 2-3 ? you would have been running for cover Wile your windows would start blowing out and the trees snapping off like toothpicks. this is what experts tornado chasers love to test with special weather study Equipment. Your video is perfect for this.

This was a multi-vortex EF3 according to the National Weather Service. There was little damage visible in this video, but if you watch my “Aftermath” video, you will see the major destruction that occurred elsewhere in our neighborhood. Like any other storm, it gained and weakened strength as it made its way across the landscape.
