This is not an ideal solution for mining. The cards are sitting 4mm away from each other causing heat to pass from one card to another and also causing heat dissipation issues. I have 4 r9 290 running at 894mh at 74c per card at 75 fan speed. If you are going to mine use riser cards to move the cards further away from each other. Also over kill on power supply's you can under volt the cards, i am pulling 920w from the plug.

I was thinking the same thing, I'm "hobby" mining with 2 R9 290x and I'm pulling in roughly 0.024 btc per 24h. But my cards are getting hot as f- and they're spaced out by 3cm and have 2 fans blowing air directly into their intakes. Unfortunately I can't undervolt the cards because I don't have the ASUS BIOS and cba to flash it, because these are my gaming cards and also because any changes to settings like clockspeed or powerlimit or fanspeed lead to an immediate bluescreen after closing bfgminer... >_

12 in fans and maybe 3 out fans...yeah...that's the ticket. If the air has nowhere to go it has nowhere to go. Set the top 6 to exhaust and cpu to intake from the top and temps will be a lot better...fresh air on the cards, hot air rises in case and exhausted at top on side and back. Overvolting = sometimes more performance but often less as it thermally throttles the card. Undervolting is where its at. Also, gpu core vs memory clock RATIO more important than actual overclock. My cards do better hashrates UNDERCLOCKED...which then allows for even lower voltages.

Linus, you don't even know what you are talking about. Your first mistake was putting it in a case and not using an open air setup, diy or a testbench. Your second mistake was not using risers to seperate the cards and provide adequate airflow. Your third mistake was using 290x's to mine. 280x's are much more cost efficient, at nearly 150% so (see law of diminishing returns). Your fourth mistake was putting a 3930k cooled by a corsair watercooler and 16GB of ram in there. A mining computer needs at max 2GB of ram, since it will run a linux distro, and an amd sempron cpu ($40), since cpu's are absolute shit at mining and cgminer does not even touch the cpu, (you could have bought 2 extra gpu's for the price you paid for the 3930k and cooler). Even you said that cpu's were bad at mining yet you still bought one of the most expensive consumer cpu's for absolutely no reason. Using "bitcoin" mining for search engine optimization was also a disgusting move, since you will pay 5x more in electricity than you'll ever make with this rig in bitcoin. GPU's can not effectively mine BTC anymore. I rate this build a 2/10. Mentioning BTC mining at all as this build's purpose is deceptive and untrue. You might first want to actually research the topic you are presenting before talking about something you no absolutely nothing about and have obviously never done before seriously. I expect better, Linus.

@Thingamajigs
10 жыл бұрын
Mining in general is dead. Hashing power required to maintain these networks alone would far outweigh the potential earnings to justify it. Especially if such coins become "worldwide". Frankly, Proof of Work is dead. Better off investing in other Proof of Stake coins.
@RyuBlade94
10 жыл бұрын
Thingamajigs Nope, actually it's not. Mining is dead for people who heard from others that it is dead. You can make a lot of profit investing in mining farm, even if the power required is a lot and pricy. I'm getting a profit of 14$ per day with just 2 7950 mining scrypt. XxWoLfxX115 Because that's not how the card are designed. They have GPU, but they aren't build for things like VRAM, dedicated ram, or even necessarily an output for a monitor. They are designed for SHA-256 computations, nothing more.

If you're looking for that kind of computer, buy an ATI Radeon 5770 HD Sapphire Edition and use it as the gaming hardware. When you're not gaming, it can be used to mine bitcoin using its GPU. It's what the professionals (like me) use to mine, because of its wonderful specs. By the way, it's MUCH MUCH MUCH more efficient to mine Bticoin with an ASCII miner, and is the only profitable way to mine right now.

ASICs are dedicated to BTC Mining and can produced at least 10GH/s (Gigahashes)--that's the bare minimum. I buy from gawminers myself. Got a 10GH/S Genesis on a cloud mining server right now.
@SolanaChris

this configuration would only be excellent for litecoin and earthcoin mining, anything short of 200 gh/s for bitcoin is not going to pay you back and the only way 200 gh/s pays you back is if you get 200 gh/s for less than $2,000 so only go this route for litecoin and earthcoin.

Are graphics cards and ASIC cards the only things that variate the mining outcome or could bad CPUs, RAM sticks, Motherboards, etc. make the profitability worse?
@insu_na
10 жыл бұрын
ASICs usually aren't cards. When mining scrypt coins, the GPU is the only thing that affects your mining performance, if you want to mine with multiple GPUs, it is advised however to buy a motherboard that has as many PCIe slots as possible (PCIe x1 is the preferrable kind, you will need to use risers then, tho.)

Watercooling helps with the temps, ASICs aren't as hot as you might think ;) I advise you not to mine bitcoins at this point in time, if you want to mine cryptocurrencies, please do some extensive research beforehand.

Do not buy Butterfly Labs hardware. They will not deliver the product until it isn't profitable anymore. If you, against all sanity, choose to buy a BFL Card however, they can also be run externally and connected via USB and don't have to be plugged into the pcie slots of the PC.

I'll sum this up quickly: Graphics cards, at this rate in time, are an utter waste of money to use on coins like bitcoin (Which run the SHA256 hash). ASICs have taken this over, and have made the difficulty (How hard the coins are to mine) More than graphics cards can keep up with. Scrypt coins on the other hand, such as litecoin and doge coin, thrive on graphics cards. Especially with ATI, these can actually turn a profit if used wisely. For GPU, use these. If you want to simply learn how bitcoins are mined you can use a graphics card, however don't expect any sort of income from it, as this is not going to happen.
