The movie reveals itself as a character study. "the battle against himself" is the internal struggle to BE the person he projects and the person people perceive him as: suave, sleek, cool and cold. But at the end of the day, he's just a man. The final scene of him shadow boxing his reflection illustrates this just perfectly. The way he looks around to make sure no one is watching and the way he checks himself out; a moment of vulnerability he would otherwise never reveal. He's only a man and only he can know it.

Well, in the shadow boxing scene, is there any conflict or contrast compared to his normal behaviour, for people he is cold and harsh, even in shadow boxing, he is practising his fight moves, so whats the difference.

notice how he looks around to make sure no one is there to see him checking himself out in the mirror. he adjusts his suit and smiles at himself, he's clearly checking himself out and not just practicing. the "cold as ice" mask he puts on in public wouldn't care and wouldn't need to make sure he looks cool. @@alwaysjaskaran

An Interview with Kim Jee-woon: What can you say about the two Buddhist parables opening and closing the film? As for the one at the beginning, I intended to open A Bittersweet Life with some narration in voice over. I thought this parable on the wind and the tree could perfectly fit with the main theme of the film, so I chose it. The one at the ending came up as a perfect conclusion while making the film. I mean that it was not meant to be there from the beginning; it just came up as the perfect answer to the questions I was asking myself when I started the film. What about the very final shot, where Lee Byung-hun boxes against his own reflection? That is the key sequence expressing the essence of the character. It is an effective manner of projecting the character's inner self to the exterior. Sun-woo is a character whose idea of himself is entirely determined by the ideas others have of him. He thinks of himself only as reflected in other people's view of him, and he believes to be like that. He is a character who has never questioned himself before. In the last scene, when Sun-woo boxes against his reflection, I wanted to convey the idea that, in the battle against himself, he lost. If you look carefully at the ending, you will notice that his reflection disappears first, leaving only the glass and outside panorama before the credits.

I thought of it as a dream he had about his future and career.he liked his life and work.he had so much respect for his boss and in the beginning of the movie when he was looking at his reflection he saw himself as prestigious honorable man who has happy comfortable life.but then ;in the last scene he saw himself broken, betrayed and homeless . his whole life was overturned and with that image of himself he knew he was finished .that's why he suddenly shoot his boss.and when he was dying he remembered the dream he had about his life that never came true.

it has nothing to do with the girl. at the end, the movie reveals itself as a character study. "the battle against himself" is his internal struggle to BE the person he projects, and the person people see him as. suave, sleek, and cold. but at the end of the day, he's just a man. vulnerable. like the rest of us. the final scene of him shadow boxing in front of the mirror, illustrates this just perfectly. the way he looks around to make sure no one is watching. i was blown away when i first saw the film. without this scene, its a great blockbuster flick. with it, it's a film that... ugh i hate to say it, but a film that touches on the human condition.

So the last scene is just : 1. a metaphore of the man he wanted to be losing against the man he really is, isn't it ? 2. A dream, he's just a simple security agent. 3. A dream of all the rebellion pictured in the movie, because he actually executed his Boss' orders. Which theory is the true one ?

The moment where he says, "This is too harsh..." Is the key to the puzzle. He was basically having a sort of fantasy about going on a revenge rampage. The fact that he is unable to get any answers for why things went down the way they did, is further proof that it was all in his head. He was merely entertaining the idea of going against his orders and taking a stand, when in fact he very likely did exactly as he was instructed and killed the girl, and is now haunted by his actions. In a way he is coping, by going through the alternate route in his mind and realizes that it would have ended in chaos and ultimate ruin. So, no matter how terrible killing an innocent girl and her lover might be, it was the one outcome that doesn't end with him and multiple others dead. He concludes then that he made the right decision and goes on with his bittersweet life.

I don't think he killed the girl, the scene where he's looking at the night city is before the boss asking him to watch out for her... The dream was just a delusion born from boredom and wanting for a better, even dramatic life, not for coping with his guilt of killing her. Incredible movie, nonetheless

@@curtisjackson5793 For me the movie is about setting priorities in life. He chose career, so he never had any love experience in his short life. The movie also showcases how quickly the tables can turn, even if you fee invincible (typical for young people). In the end its a tragic story about a man who lived a very superficial life, that once he discovered what could have been (love) is deeply disappointed with himself. My take makes me deeply resonate with it, because my life is also superficial and I lack a deep connection to someone I consider special.

Well, if the dream began from the beginning of the movie as this scene would suggest, then even if all these characters were real (& probably are) all of the events were his own fiction. A lengthy scenario for him to be a hero. But part of the beauty of the movie is undoubtedly that we can make our own assumptions about when he was dreaming, if at all. Maybe the "dream" was the fantasized romance he never had with the girl.

Not at all. Here you have the relation violence-love, bitter-sweet, If he really killed the couple and dreamed the rest of it, he puts violence before love, because he is most comfortable with it. He is not comfortable with love, because he knows his boss won't approve his mistake for not killing her. And also because he had never had a girl and wasn't in love. That's the whole reason why his boss trusts him this task - the bosses assumption about his uncomfortableness with love(the girl).

I think it was his dream (loving his boss's gf and boss betraying him and then killing the boss and himself) and that dream of his can't be true. This particular scene (shadow boxing) is from the beginning i think where he drinks his coffee after fighting w three guys but then the mission of taking care of his boss's gf hasn't happened yet, so how can he be dreaming about loving that girl and then get betrayed by boss? Or the shadow boxing of him after the movie ends its just to mess w the fans

the shadow boxing represent him fighting with himself, because he lives a bittersweet life (just a security guard), wanting for some drama and therefore meaning in his life. It was all just a dream... So they opted for the laziest ending architecture ever? I mean - give the writers and director some credit here to not have climaxed with the worst ass pull ending possible. It's a good thing the director already claified this wasn't the case and that it wasn't all just a dream. Howerver, having said that... As I'm writing this my perspective is changing 😉 So on the flipside, I also have some slight interpretation differences to the directors commentary, and I'll always say a good work of art should work with the viewer and not drag them around by the wrist, so really just take what you want from it and if you want that ass pull - nobody can take that away from you ✌️
