The little drums your talking about are called "Micro Beats" and were invented by Bjork. There made up of loads of common sounds like cards being shuffled, and were made by her, so the album would sound crisp and clear when played on an laptop, which at the time had terrible speakers which couldn't process a lot of music's actual sound. She's a genius!

You know that saying 'dance like no one is watching'? Well Bjork sings like no one is listening, totally unfetered and free, no worries of sounding unusual. Some of the production on this album was by electronic duo Matmos who were experimenting a lot around this time with these kind of sounds. Their 'A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure' album was made primarily from samples of medical tools and procedures.

Before Björk, there was Nina Hagen. Since Björk's vocals caused such an impact on you, take a listen to her album Nunsexmonkrock. It's arguably the most creative use of human voice ever put on a record. Sometimes people say she sounds evil, I see it as the wrath of angels in ecstasy.

I always love watching more people discover Bjork 😊😊🥂. I will recommend listening to her discography in chronological order. It will truly showcase her Growth As a Person & her Sonic Evolution 🤯🤯. This album was inspired by her romance with a good friend and fellow music producer she would collab with at times, Matthew Barney. She had gone thru a divorce from her son's dad ; a few years before this album. This project is a reflection of this new phase of her life and encountering Love again but hesitant to trust. Vespertine's sounds are full of classical instruments , electronic Synths but also ingeniously incorporates the use of Micro-Beats(everyday sounds like shuffling a deck of cards to shaking a bag of chips) in the lush yet simple production. Your comment about RadioHead and the sounds are spot on. Her previous albums Debut (1993) & Post (1995) were influence for Radiohead and their 97 album, Ok Computer.

You should totally react to a matmos record. They did some of the beats on this album (mostly the samplier stuff) and they have a really cool discography. I would recommend either the civil war, which is this really cool medieval folktronica thing or ultimate care 2 which is a single 40 minute song, entirely sampling the duo’s washing machine.
