+Amina R. It so happens that I can speak Arabic to a degree. But eventhough Icelandic shares many sounds with Arabic, the two languages are still vastly different. Languages tend to be easier to learn when they're closer to you. Hebrew for Arabs, Icelandic for Danish people, etc. Furthermore, exposure to a host of different accents doesn't make you better at speaking languages. Native English speakers are constantly faced with foreign accents, yet they tend to perform worse than other speakers as far as using foreign languages is concerned. What matters is exposure to foreign languages. People from countries like Belgium, Luxemburg, Switzerland and China are more likely to be plurilingual and to speak those languages well than people from countries like Saudi Arabia, Great-Britain or Germany. Typically, Arabs are known for how bad they are at speaking foreign languages, often showcasing poor synthax and poor word choices. In this case, Khaled Abo Al-Naga doesn't come from a context where he had to learn how to speak multiple languages very well, as Arabic is all he actually needed as an Egyptian person. In other words, Al-Naga's proficiency has nothing to do with his origins and all to do with his dedication, skill and talent.
@alpaci4600

Isakaldaz Wulfazizsunus Arabs are known to be bad at speaking another language? Talk about pulling nonsense out of your ass. Everyone is typically bad at speaking another language, especially if it's a language that doesn't belong to the same language family as the person's mother tongue. However, the people in Saudi Arabia who speak English do so quite well. Some sound exactly like Americans. There are plenty of US comedians who are flabbergasted by this fact when they travel to Saudi Arabia. The people in Japan do so poorly. This difference is the result of shyness and exposure. Both Saudi and Japanese are perhaps equally exposed to English but the first group is more brazen at trying to converse than the latter. I don't know what world you live in where you consider people in Belgium and China to be masters of language considering they typically only speak well the languages that are close to their mother tongue.

@Nyne And that's where your wrong Nyne, there is no such thing as "Objective History". That's a paradigm of the Victim culture. In history at one time or another evryone is the martyr and monster at different points in their lives. History is collection of amalgamation of many different points of view often interpreting the same event. It is through this tapestry of eyes and minds that we come to our collective history as we know it and perceive it. To say "Real History" is often wrong, is a fool's notion....People have bias and opinions and they show up in their writings, throughout all of time. This is how Archeologists, Geologist, Anthropologist, etc....Look at the collective facts, sources, records etc and make the best determination possible as to what is "True" and False". DNA and Geneology are really making great leaps foward in determining historical fact and fiction. Just thought I'd include this in hear because this is the new frontier in history..Genetic Archeology.

Well it's a pretty accurate description of Arab-Byzantine dynamics, but as a Tunisian I have two problems with the description. First Tunisia anciently known as Ifriqiya or Africa isnot at all a Desert, its nickname in Arabic is "Al Khadhra", meaning: the Green. And it has always been a fertile Land, since the time of Carthage, this is why Ziyadat Allah kingdom thrived so much at that time, the desert is in the extreme south of the country and Kairouan/Al Qayrawan, the capital city at that time was not in the desert despite bein the only Tunisian capital inland, it had at that time between 100 and 200.000 inhabitants, which is huge, the city was well provided with water and is situated in the actual Tunisian steppa, which became a steppa due to desertification and the troubles of 1055 invasion and civil war, this is also why the capital city moved again to Tunis near Carthage. The other point is why the hell did they make Emir Ziyadat Allah a cannibla ???? This is ridiculous ! The only mad and tyrannical ruler of this dynasty was Ibrahim II who ruled Ifriqiya from 875 to 902 and he was pretty good during his first ten years. This is the only one who might have been portrayed as a cannibal (there was rumors but he was more of an Ivan the Terrible).

Individual conversions are hard to see in the historical record, especially given the fact that the vikings did not leave written records behind during this era. Historical records are not the be all, end all, to seeing the past because sometimes they have biases and may exclude certain information for certain reasons contemporary to their time. Also they don't always record everyday occurrences in society since those are taken for granted. This is broadly speaking but historical records are usually done by the educated and elite, they won't portray an accurate picture of people outside those distinctions. So I don't think it's safe to say that none converted but it's more reasonable to assume that majority probably did not.

Exactly, I don't get it either. Ziyadat Allah was a real, historical figure, the man who conquered Sicily. Bjorn is also a (semi) historical figure, who was known to travel to the Medditereanian Sea. Hell, the sources even mention that he went to both Sicily and North Africa, so it's quite possible that those two met, but it's only a speculation. Norsemen as a whole had extensive trade relations with Muslim world. Arabic coins were found all over the Scandinavia. Arabs mostly bought furs and slaves from them. Norsemen were known as best mercenaries at the time, and they were everywhere. Frankish, English and other Christian rulers hired them often. Some of them were part of elite Varangian Guard to the Roman Emperors in Constantinople. We also know for a fact that some of them worked as mercenaries all around Muslim world. Hell, Arabs had even whole slave armies made up from Slavic slaves, so it's not that impossible to imagine that Norsemen who sold those slaves were also working for various Arab rulers as well. We know that around this time some bands of Norsemen ended up in Al-Andalus, converted to Islam (that's why they found runestones with the name "Allah" on it) and raided most of western Medditeranian. Sure, the show is FAR from being accurate - I myself was a bit butthurt when out of the blue, Floki said that he finds Islam more compatible to him than Christianity, for example. I also don't like the extensive usage of shieldmaidens in the show. And don't get me started on clothing and armour in particular - it's all wrong. I've finished watching the series once the whole Medditeranian arc was finished - as a Byzantophile it was fun to see Roman controlled Sicilly (even if what I saw wasn't accurate at all), but I wasn't really interested in the history of Ragnar's sons. Don't get me wrong, real history of the sons of Ragnar is REALLY interesting, but as the show progressed, it became more and more fantasy like (Chinese princess, daughter of Emperor himself, ends up in Scandinavia - come on :D). First season was great. Had that authentic feel to it, even though it wasn't always accurate. I loved the usage of various language in the show, too. One of my favourite episodes was the one from season 1, episode 8 (I think), when the Ragnar, his family and Athelstan went to Uppsala. Really great episode. Even siege of Paris arc wasn't as interesting as seeing some aspects of Norse culture, IMHO.

He surprises them by knowing and speaking their language and begins a deep discussion about their and his own theology in order to quickly break the ice. I like the Vikings' surprised and confused face expressions during the first few seconds. Also if you pay attention to how he greets Eiphimeus, it can be deduced that there is some kind of pressure between them. And from how he greets Zemphira (correct me regarding her name please) - they are attracted to each other.

Got to be honest, its interesting to see other lands and cultures, it gets boring when focused on just the one settlement. And why are people complaining historical inaccuracy? The show has already been playing fast and loose with its historical portrayals, not to mention the supernatural images with odin, haarbard and even god. Things and places like this make the show interesting. The difference however between all the different criticisms,(and the one that has actual merit in my eyes) is whether or not these plot threads go any where. Yidu, a chinese character in season 3, was slammed for apparent cultural diversification, her apparence didnt trigger me, she couldve been an interesting character. What makes me indifferent of her is how her storyline went *FUCKING....NOWHERE* . I feel the same way here. Unless they return to this place or we see these characters again, the show wasted 45-60 minutes of cumilative screen time with these scenes in the mediterranean.

I thought the Byzantines were most of the time at war with their neighbours or at least preparing for war? I mean, I know how their diplomacy worked and the portrayal in the show symbolizes the situation on a personal dimpolatic level but it's not how the diplomacy actually was. The emperor routinely sparked rebellions, gathered intel on foreign ambitions and politics; distracted or destroyed his enemies by supporting their rivals and to conclude Byzantine diplomacy was therefore mainly a means for war without soldiers dying on battlefields and the neighbours always were opportunistic, sending presents and men one year only to invade in the next should the time seem right. There were few allies of Constantinople for centuries - and most of its neighbours and especially with Asia Minor the sword was a more commen embassador. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab-Byzantine_wars

The Byzantine diplomacy was well known after the fall of Constantinople in order to maintain the Empire as long as the Turks were not well educated the Byzantines hijacked their minds actually. PS Wikipedia is good but for Byzantine matters and Orthodox Christianity is 100% propaganda written by the westerns!

In someway of course people from the north ended up in the south but wait:At that time,italy was controlled by Goths,then there kingdom failed,but even now in northen italy the people are more germanic then italian(even though its a mix) same for every other land that has access to the mediteranian(i probably spelled it wrong,whatever).But that people are talking here about raids in southern Europe,is a joke lol.Again on some levels everything is possible,but the vikings never possesed lands on south europe.The way they had to take was even for them a risk,then don't forget history can never be 100% accurate.

I think it was meant to show the extention of Nordic reach coupled with the complexity of the political situation then as opposed to pedestrian belive. Also it shows a gruesome scene after that where they want to show that the seemingly cultured appearance of the Mediterranean powers, compared to the Viking life style, has a more savage and practical underbelly in reality. Well I might be wrong but that's how I sees it

Historical information you should know before watching: Who is Ziyadat Allah ? Ziyadat Allah was Aghlabid Prince (Aghlabid: Arab dynasty of north Africa Funded by the Abbasids) ruler of Ifriqiya (Current Tunisia and Sicily). Aghlabids was not Cannibals of course! Location and Climate of Al-Qayrawān: (Kairouan was not a desert !) Located in the center of Tunisia in a plain at almost equal distance from the sea and the mountain, Kairouan is the most ancient Arabo-Muslim base of the Maghreb founded in (670AD) when the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi selected a site (in the middle of a dense forest, then infested with wild beasts and reptiles at the foot of the atlas mountain range). Kairouan considered as the principal holy city in the Maghreb.

I am a Muslim and not offended. They have been fighting Islam on TV for decades...WE, however, fighting it on the ground, in REAL LIFE...tell me: what do you see around you when you walk in the streets? Any streets in any country? :) ENJOY life as a movie or a show. All lies eventually fades and only the truth remains. If you could beat God you would've done it already...but keep fighting, it's better this way in so many ways.

What do I see on streets? People going to work, kids going to school, and some tourists. 😉 Btw I doubt this TV show would fight Islam in any way. If it fights someone it's the Christians because they are the enemies of the protagonists, the Vikings. And they are portrayed as very bad. Like this Christian nun in this particular scene, she is the mistress of the Emir.😄

Of course not, there's not any single historical source that mentioned the cannibalism in the life of the prince Zyiadat. The serie is a western serie, westerners enjoy demonizing Arabs in their series it very known.
