i train bjj with one arm because my left arm i only have it developed down to the elbow ,and this guard works wonders on me while doing the spider guard grip and my left leg doing like a single x guard and i love it when the sweeps come flawlessly.

Thanks for the amazing work...your vids were and still are part of my game improvements! Oss 🙏🏼👊🏼...And thanks for inspiring other good guys for breakdowns/analysis!

hi entire matches are full of scrambles, so if you saw Lo punch the DLR hole and hit a knee slide you might think great move, but if you see how him trying unsuccessfully to punch ("off the move"), you figure out it's a strategy/pattern. Lo hits other passes too, but those are more "random', if you know what I mean. I think at a high level, the move is less important vs the overall strategy/gameplan that unfolds. In the "Scouting Lo" vid my focus is on his "unsuccessul" passes for example

Yes I call that an "active posting" leg vs a normal DLR hook (see my blog entry accompanying the video). If you don't want/need to spin I guess you don't really need a tight hook (esp if you have a spider grip on the other side to stop passers from fleeing)

Analysis is surgical and on point. AmazingT TYVM! Looking forward to more videos. Going to try this at open mat tomorrow. I'm always vulnerable to leg drags, smashes, and toreandos during dlr guards, but the spider on the other side makes so much sense.

hey good point! I call it spider/DLR because that's the "guard structure" that Lo can hold and have a "base" from. While in the X/Spider transition, he has to sweep or bail/switch because it's not stable structure/guard (vs real single leg X marcelo style with the "spider leg" under/on the hip). Sort of like how when someone inverts under DLR to berimbolo and gets stuck there, I wouldn't really call that a "guard" (well ok the miyaos can get stuck there for ages)...

fantastic breakdown. really enjoyed the use of langhi's guard to explain lo's. my only complain is that the parts that you have to read come and go a little too quickly. i know i can pause the video, but it would be nice if the parts you need to read came and went a little slower. thanks again, keep making these videos!

sorry for the late reply! you need to get better at fencing with spider side (its practice), also the moment he tries the double team on the spider leg, you need to be ready get the DLR hook off (standard drag defences). the DLR side doesn't have to be married to the "hook", if you look in my blog post on this video, it's almost an "active posting" leg

maybe you can try check out Caio Terra? He's another example of someone who "breaks the rules". Rooster and yet does not use spider/DLR much but instead half guard (a guard hated universally by most "modern BJJ" ppl). Why is he a world champ then? Look at his half guard structure, its not the same as most and allows him to use it vs bigger opponents and yet avoid the "smash". That guard style is "off the move" and is the real thing to focus on I feel

Hmm yes, he teaches the foot placement that way, but in his matches he doesn't even bother to get that sometimes, one he shoots through he is already chopping down and that foot which shot through might still be making contact with the floor Not sure if he has had a lot of DQs, but then he is pretty careful about avoiding it from the videos I've seen so probably not.

It's not hard, but not easy to describe in a comment box...essentially I look at "off the move" stuff, focusing on a successful pass/submission isn't as helpful as watching the original footage showing setup postures/grips/movement (for example DLR knee posting or active posting is all stuff a highlight would typically cut out). Also I don't only focus on "successful" executions, but sequences where the opponent was forced to react/defend (then u can really see "game plans",ie DLR Counters vid)
@bxlawless100

one more thing, his dlr guard side is very loose (not really under hooking the leg with his foot) which allows two points. one, he can quickly get under an opponent and two, he can save the strain on his dlr knee. also, the dlr grip in nearly impossible to break.

Could you try to explain the "off the move" stuff you speak of? If not here then in a PM? I find it almost strange that you say that you don't look at the successful passes or submissions since you seem to only show the successful instances in your videos. Thanks! Your videos are amazing!

it is my understanding that bringing the inside(left leg) in and then around the knee is a DQ. In a couple of shots like at 4:43 Lo is close. Early on did he have any DQs as he was perfecting? Looks like the proper placement for the left foot is with the knee bent touching the right hamstring and the foot across to the opp hamstring. Correct? Awesome analysis!

Does anyone know a counter to when they block the leg shooting through by putting their knees almost together?
@BJJSCOUT
11 жыл бұрын
you need to keep the spider on as long as you can, leg dragging will only work as a counter once you are under and have shot through (see part 2) and can't hit the 2 sweeps. before that dragging is not a good tactic vs someone good at this guard..

Hi Scout. I've been playing this guard in competition since studying this with success. However instead of DLR I play spider/shin guard with the same grip set. I lay back like lo rather than sat up like Nicolini. I find with the shin on shin it's easier to shoot inside for the double ankle sweep. I also use it to unbalance a standing opponent by elevating the shin on shin while either kicking away or down with the spider foot. Kind of like a modified version of Wardzinskis butterfly sweep with pant and sleeve grips. Could you please tell me what advantage Lo has to using a DLR rather than shin on shin? Thank you so much for your content
@kmdlopper

He uses the DLR sometimes to hit other sweeps DLR related (see a recent seminar video on youtube where he goes over this) - for example, one sweep he will push the thigh with his spider side and lock both legs on his opponents shins when they come back from the push - then he will grab both sleeves and do an overhead/sortof balloon sweep. I think this is just a random technique though, and I haven't seen him hit it a lot. He seems to use the DLR pant grab with a collar grip as an entry to X-guard and do a situp sweep from there these days. Can I ask what belt level you are? I have also been using this guard in competition and hit it multiple times. Would love to know your success details

Amazing analysis...thank you! However, I'd consider his guard came to be more of a spider/X-guard hybrid rather than spider/DLR (at least the sweep itself), because he goes from inside the leg around to the outside (like 1leg X) rather than from outside in (DLR hook).

@ricardowashington4447
9 жыл бұрын
Yes, but its a good thing. I'm about 5 foot 6.5 blue belt. Almost a hobbit compared to some other guys in my gym. Playing hybrid against taller guys has forced me to really focus on using the spider control to stretch them out. I'm trying to get better at switching between pushing their far knee away then getting spider control and vice versa, I'm getting beat by taller purples, but less and less each time. Switching back and forth from De La Riva control to shin control (watch the Nicollini BJJ scout vids) is helping a lot too.
@craik7

+Ricardo Washington yeah makes sense to switch back and forth from DLR to shin control against bigger guys to prevent stacking.

It really helps, just be sure to really dig the spider grip in on the arm. Some of the physically stronger upper belts will rip it of the bicep if they can grip it then I'm in leg drag pass danger. If that spider grip gets lazy the whole thing falls apart.
