this is a typical, independent, "convince me!" Northern/spitz/primitive dog - just because the markings are somewhat similar to a Border Collie, don't be fooled. There are reasons why they think for themselves. People who are familiar with European breeds will be fish out of water with them.

What is your recommendation for this breed in a warmer climate, in which the dog will be inside AC during the hottest part of the day and then exercised in the evening and early morning?

Yeah right... No other dogs around... My Karjalan is like a well rasied son, until he sees another dog, then all training and senses are gone. no way my dog go off leash.

Impressive. Also it's clear that the dog is happy to comply and not coerced to do anything. Well done. I hope to be there with my future Karelian.

dogs who hunt "close" or wait for release commands, or those who quarter a field and retrieve but don't eat the prey, are all skilled and specialized in their niche/style of what is correct or expected & desired by their humans. Very useful and admirable. Dogs who "hunt" bear or moose - either in North America, or Northern Europe, traditionally spotted, chased and cornered and attacked the prey, hoping their human would come and help finish it off. Sled dogs might be cut loose from the sled and grab and release a bear as a pack of wolves might. Different cultural expectations. Tougher, independent dogs.

My KBD does all kinds of tricks. Also more stubborn than a mule. Nice job Josh!

Look at the official page of Finnish Kennel club for ORIGINAL description of KBD : "The Karelian Bear Dog enjoys its own company and may be slightly sullen. It is alert, unyielding, bold and gutsy. Some individuals are eager to defend their territory and have a strong ego ( Even in downtown Detroit ! ). The Karelian Bear Dog is happy to stand guard and it has a very powerful hunting instinct." www.kennelliitto.fi/en/dogs/finnish-breeds/karelian-bear-dog

If you want a easyer everyday dog for an urban "ambience" , think again what "PURE" breed you really want.

@@jdlvtrn1 “hoping their human would come finish it off”: my KBD cornered a raccoon up a tree in my yard late one Nov night. Standing there I watched the raccoon come out of the tree & attach its entire body around my dogs face with its mouth locked in my dogs mouth & its claws dug in near both her eyes & around her neck.....basically it was suffocating her as she couldn’t even make a sound. Once I figured out what was happening I reacted by stepping into it and slugged it as hard as I could. It released & ran into the woods. No, it wasn’t rabid thank goodness, but it sure was cold in my bare feet & pjs. Lol quite an experience waking up out of a dead sleep.
