20 years ago, in 2002, Denzel Washington won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Training Day and Halle Berry won Best Actress for her role in Monster’s Ball. It was Denzel Washington’s second Oscar after his win for Best Supporting Actor in the historical war drama Glory in 1990. That same night, Sidney Poitier was bestowed an Honorary Award, for “his extraordinary performances and unique presence on the screen and for representing the industry with dignity, style and intelligence.” He received his award from Denzel Washington himself in what was a never-before-seen moment of representation for black actors at the Academy Awards. That moment remains all the more exceptional if we consider how few black men have been honored at the Oscars before and after the 2002 edition. 20 years later, the edition’s 20th anniversary, Will Smith's Oscar nomination and Sidney Poitier’s recent passing can lead us to reflect on the evolution of black actors’ relationship with Oscars before and after this historical moment.
