I used to work as a line leader for Son Chief Electric and we used to build 500 toasters a day, everyday except for weekends. They were simpler back in the 70's, no electronics at all. They used a heated bimetal that tripped a double latch for an adjustable timer. As the bimetal blade heated up it would trip the first stage of the latch which in turn would shut off the heater on the bimetal, as the bimetal cooled it would trip the final latch and then pop.

Very nicely put together video, thanks. I came across it when my own toaster broke down, and I was hunting for any clues, and of course all the answers are here! My unit is European, and built for 230V mains, so although the basic functionality is identical to your unit, all the heater heater sections are connected in one long chain (again with a tap at the bottom to power the control board). The element nearest to the incoming hot connection had failed, and the result was that absolutely nothing worked! In short, the toaster was TOAST! (lol!)

How did you get the handle off? I’m trying to take mine apart and that’s my hang up.

In a toaster, oven, water heater etc check the resistance of the heating elements first; most of the time you'll find the problem. Lots of electronic techs use diode mode to diagnose. The meter puts out a few volts through a resistor and measures the drop across the probes; typical diodes will read 0.6 or open depending on the polarity. With the power off if you just stick the red probe on ground and probe with black around the circuit. You'll get a voltage drop at each point. It's generally 0 for grounds, and around .2-.6 for most working electronics. When a line shows open or near 0 that shouldn't, there's your problem. Diode mode is faster than resistance mode because the meter doesn't have to autorange.

This exact thing happened in the exact same spot on my 4 slice. Broke in the same way at the same spot. Thanks for going through with this year down.

Thanks a lot! My beloved toaster showed the same behavior (after a loud bang) as the one you investigated. I was hoping there is just a fuse somewhere inside I can replace and it works again. But lesson learned. It was the heating element saying goodbye and I now have to find a new toaster or wait longer with slice turning in between.

The only reason I wanted to watch was to see how the push down latch was removed so I could take the shell off the top of the toaster. All that is mentioned is that it "pops" off.

Thank you. This was a very informative video. I did not realise that the entire control board is nothing but a timer circuit that controls when the electromagnet switch turns off therefore cutting power to the elements. Originaly I thought the control board was more sophisticated and that it used some fancy PWM signal to control the amount of power being applied to the elements to control the heating based on settings chosen on the front control panel.

Great video. What about the control board? this is what I have an issue with as the magnet wire is not holding handle, and no lights on front panel which mean something is broken on the control panel. There is a power in 10.12v, but something is broken on the board which I'm trying to figure out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I'm doing an engineering assignment on this product, I was wondering what the basic electrical data is. ie. Voltage, amperage etc. Any help would be wonderful, cheers

I salvaged our broken toaster last night by stripping it down for its compnents. I used some of the thin nichrome wire for a portable soldering iron powered by an 18650 battery, which i salvaged from a laptop at the dump. I want to try use the electro magnet for a torch. So when i turn the torch on, i could possibly stick it to a metal surface. I intend to use it under the car for instance.

Your toaster was stuck in bagel mode. That's what the bagel button does. It turns off the outside elements. The buttons do more than just timing....my guess is there was an issue with the board you ignored.

I have a Black*Decker... in low light i pressed the lever down very lop sided not realizing what I had done, now it stopped working it pretty new also... worked great.... nice even toasting. Lever works , but heating element doesn't come on.... I hope I can find the answer here. Thanks for posting I will let you know if I can fix it

Thanks for the video! This is embarrassing to ask, but how did you get the plastic handles off the 'push-down' lever? That's where I'm stuck on mine. I don't want to force it off, but I just can't figure it out.

The metal shaft has a bend in it that slots into a notch in the handle. I can't remember if that notch is viewable before it is taken apart though. If it is squeeze the metal seen with some long nose pliers, if not gently pull it straight out with a up and down wiggle.

How does the voltage get knocked down from 110VAC to the 10 or 11ish voltage going to the control board? Is there some hidden resistor that I missed?

They are using a tap from a small section of the heating element for the low voltage.

Very usefull to repair my toaster when Bodum toasters. I have no parts and no help they are just sellers . My problem was the power pop rivet on the plate that was loose . But with your help in spite of the attitude of those big polluters of the planet (use and throw out companies). One apliance that is not going to garbage and could be used for more time. Thanks and keep doing those repairs video

Very interesting and informative. Thankyou. The toaster I have is a Chinese clone almost of your Black and Decker. I'm ignorant as regards electronics but don't like to throw anything away. My Generation didn't. My problem is that the lever will not stay down even after the contacts have being cleaned. I noticed even after you disconnected the control board you still had power going into the toaster magnetic coil. I don't. Any suggestions. And I don't mean bugger off:)

That was long. Unfortunately toasters are part of our throw away society. The first thing you check are the elements. If they are bad, its spare parts or trash.

First of all, just plug it in and test all the buttons and functions?! It may have nothing at all wrong, just an idiot who returned it. Some "Bagel" functions turn half the elements off intentionally to toast just the cut side; overthinking way too much before breaking it down and risking more damage.
