My black and tan boy is just over 10 years old and is our first dog. He's a wonderful companion, sweet natured and greedy and very loving - and very much loved in return. It's the eyebrows that give his beautiful face so much character and I don't even want to think about life without him.

I love Bootsie, but I have a special place in my heart for tri-colors. That is why I love Apple so much. Then, it would be black and tan. All my dogs over my lifetime have been black and white, starting out with a border collie and ending with Cavaliers. I am 74.

Bootsie is so wonderful. I'd wanted a Cavalier for ages but couldn't decide between tri and b & t. I wanted a certain momma dog to be the mother of mine so I knew I'd get a tri. Now I want a b & t. My tri needs a playmate besides the poor cat. I think the white spots give them individuality. I swear cavaliers are like potato chips: no one can have just one.

All Cavaliers are beautiful, but Black and Tans are my favorite, there's a gravitas and regal hauteur to their appearance that I find very appealing. Of course my boy is a Black and Tan, and despite his serious looks he's as loving and sweet as any of the breed. 💘🐶

Hello from Dorset in the United Kingdom. This was so lovely to see the Black & Tan dogs. As you say, we have seen a lot about the 3 other colours. All your dogs are beautiful in their own way, I always had Blenheim dogs, but I would happily have any others as they have such a beautiful temperament. Thank you, I love to see them all.❤🐶🐶❤️x

Just like you Charlie always loved black & tans. None of the 3 we owned had the white in their coat but I think they look beautiful with that extra addition in their coat & always love seeing Bootsie. ❤

I know I am biased, but the Cavalier King Charles is truly the best dog ever! sweet, good-natured, smart and loving. The Perfect Companion Dog. We have two Blenheim boys who have us beautifully trained (lol!) - although in theory, they are our hearing impaired service dogs. They travel with us everywhere. On one flight, a mom commented "I wish my children were as well-behaved as your dogs!" Really enjoy your channel -always so informative and upbeat. Thanks!

My black and tan girl, "Maybelline" (Mabes for short) has perfect markings. Not a white hair on her anywhere. When you mentioned agility I said, YES that's exactly what I need to get Mabes into. She's almost 2 but has energy to spare. She's perfect for it. I just hope not too late getting her into it.

Good Morning Charlie.. i wanted to mention that Bootsie puts me in mind of a Cavalier that one of my best friends found in 1983. Someone had dropped her off along the road. Evil. Thankfully wasn't during the cold. My friend Bryan found her and took her in. We always thought he found her not long after being dropped off.. Named her "Wembley" She was a black and tan Cavalier. Bootsie is almost a carbon copy of Wembley.. Hope all is well take care we wish you all a wonderful week..

I love the Black and Tan colour most, my first girl was a beautiful Black and Tan, I loved her very much but she wasn’t the smartest dog! unlike Bootsie my Tia loved to sunbathe in the hot sun and she wouldnt go out of the sun when she got hot she just carried on laying there getting hotter and hotter until I made her go inside to cool down.

Bootsie is so cute and so smart - she is the perfect ambassador for the Cavalier breed. This video got me searching for your earlier videos about Cavalier colors and I was struck by your statement in your Puppy Report video from June 2021 where you highlighted Bootsie’s litter and you said that she definitely had the dominant genes for Black and No White and the recessive gene for White because her puppies had white. I’m wondering what you think is the genetic source for the little tuft of white under her chin and on her chest. Is it possible that there are degrees of dominance and her gene for No White, while dominant, is not 100%? I find this topic fascinating.

The genetic analysis I always refer to is actually a simplification. A dog with any Blenheim or Tricolor in its background could throw a remnant of a touch of white, even if it's a solid color.

Bootsie is just beautiful … that is so interesting about after a dog is spayed their coat can change . I think that’s happened to my Bella . I was it thinking her coat changed because I had her groomed and after that her coat changed . If I were fortunate enough to get another cavalier would you suggest not having her spayed . 🤔I never thought about not having mine spayed but I’m thinking that my decision should have had more thought behind it Thank you for a great video ♥️

There is some mixed opinion on this point. I have heard some people who advocate keeping dogs intact, and that would maintain the natural hormone balance. However, aside from the nuisance of having a girl go through seasons twice a year, bleeding for a week or so, and being a breeding magnet for any male dog within sniffing range, there is the danger of pyometra. Pyo is a uterine infection, and can be deadly in many cases. It's not as uncommon as you might believe - we have had 4 or 5 cases ourselves, and in at least two of them, the girl very nearly died. If a dog contracts pyo, the usual and most certain cure is an emergency spay. In one of our dogs' cases, we had to use an emergency clinic, and the surgeon there botched the procedure and caused acute sepsis. We were lucky to bring her back from the brink with 24-hour IV treatment for a week or so. This was after spending thousands of dollars on emergency care. On balance, I would think that spaying is the preferred choice.

Any tips on dealing with a 1 1/2 year old intact male? He has SO much energy and wants to mark a lot. My biggest issue is his excess energy. He actually runs in the yard enough that he appears ‘skinny’. Thanks for any help! Bonnie

I think it's all a matter of training, going back to when they are young puppies. Our boy Murphy was not neutered until he was over 5 years old, and we were absolutely meticulous about his crate training. It was a lot of work for the first 6-8 months, but by watching him carefully, we were able to train him not only to refrain from marking inside the house, but to walk off the back deck and into the yard before relieving himself. That stuck with him for his entire 16-year life, and we never had a single problem. At 1 1/2 years, you may have to use a crate on occasion (mainly when you are not able to watch him), but you'll need to pay close attention to him when you are with him.

I adopted a 2 yr old black and tan cava from a rescue, turned out no one had taught him anything including housetraining, it mainly took a lot of patience and self taught clicker training to sort him and once he caught on it stuck and he was immaculately clean till his last day at 14 years. Be patient and gentle, you sound very caring, you'll succeed ❤

We have all four colours. Our black and tan is nearly 6 months old and he has white on his chest. He is already starting to feel the heat along with our tri colour boy. Their coats seem a lot more work than the ruby and Blenheim coats

It definitely is more work - the black hair grows faster and more fully than the other colors.
