A history of Detroit's Black Bottom neighborhood including interviews with Jamon Jordan, Marsha Music, Bert Dearing, and exhibit curator Emily Kutil. Additional footage shows the exhibit opening on January 26, 2019.
The exhibit was installed in Strohm Hall on the third floor of the Detroit Public Library from January-April 2019. The exhibit uses photographs from the Burton Historical Collection at DPL that were documented by the city between 1949-1950 as part of the eminent domain process before the neighborhood was razed for urban renewal. The Black Bottom Street View Exhibit stitches the photographs in panoramas together to recreate Black Bottom street by street.
The Detroit Public Library (DPL) is the largest public library system in the state of Michigan. The Main Library and its 21 neighborhood branches make it one of the most valuable and accessible public institutions in the state. Stay up-to-date on information and events by visiting www.detroitpubliclibrary.org and following the library on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
