The media's full of vultures, and with the story I'm about to tell, it's probably evident they utilize police scanners for departments that haven't switched to encrypted channels. Many years ago my family owned a gun store/indoor shooting range. Someone came into the store, rented a range gun and bought a box of ammo, and went to his lane. After firing a few dozen rounds, he went to the back wall out of camera view and committed suicide. Within seconds the patron that was in the lane next to his came running through the door onto the store floor screaming to call 911 and told the staff what happened. News vans from 2 different stations were in the parking lot before the police arrived (and the police arrived in under 4 minutes).

Just to add my observations--as a former Chief Pilot Corporate Safety and a senior captain on the 747 at that time, I was puzzled at how this accident could have occurred. The movie tells us that it was an explosion in the center fuel tank, which must be true. The movie goes on to indicate that a possible spark caused the fuel in the empty tank to ignite and explode. But the spark would have to be INSIDE the tank to cause the explosion--an outside spark would not do that even with defective wiring. I have flown 747s in command for 7500 hours and been an instructor on the type. The conclusion that I came to was that a spark could have been caused by a defective wiring problem IN A FUEL BOOSTER PUMP within the tank. There are two of these pumps. We used to demonstrate, in the Safety Division to the Cabin Crew, how inflammable aviation fuel was. A bucket of fuel was placed outside of the class in a demo area and a lighted rag was thrown into it. The flame went out, doused by the liquid fuel. VAPORIZED fuel was another matter--it ignited immediately. The center tank was only filled for longer range flights but as a precaution we always kept fuel in the center tank, even on short flights so that the pumps would be covered. Once at cruise altitude and in very cold temps, the center tank fuel would be consumed.

One of the most lasting memories I have is hearing an interview of a witnesses to this event who was piloting an aircraft off the coast that day. When he was a young man he was a helicopter pilot Vietnam for three tours. It's his his direct quote it always stuck with me what he said " I saw a ground to air missile streak from the service of the water to altitude and I saw a detonation above my altitude. I then saw a streak down toward the surface of the water and an explosion. There is no doubt in my mind it was a surface-to-air missile." When a combat veteran with this much experience and flying aircraft sees something like this that they saw happened in Vietnam through three straight years of combat says something like this they do not suffer from Hysteria. It is based on experience.I've also seen radar tracks of a surface contact heading at high speed away from the area that cannot be accounted for. Add to that there were many stinger missile systems that or not accounted for during our support of the mujahideen in Afghanistanand while there's a lot of smoke there's some fire there. never in the history of the 747 has this type explosion ever happened before or after.
