In 1985 Beverly Bryan, Stella Dadzie and Suzanne Scafe, members of OWAAD (Organisation of Women of African & Asian Descent), published Heart of the Race, a powerful testimony to the collective experience of black women in Britain and their relationship to the British state throughout its long history of slavery, empire and
colonialism. This book shows how for Black feminism, knowledge and activism are always intimately and profoundly connected. In 2018 a second edition of Heart of the Race was published as part of Verso’s Feminist Classics Series, enabling the book to reach new
generations of readers and activists. This panel opens up a conversation about the book and its enduring relevance with authors Stella Dadzie and Suzanne Scafe as well as Lola Okolosie and Heidi Mirza who are both featured in the new edition. Together they reflect upon Black British feminist histories and consider how these histories offer us a vital and critical resource for the present.
