I stay in a neighborhood south of Chicago where a Walmart recently closed, Homewood. It was previously at a location 1 mile away in Glenwood. I was also a police officer in this town. I personally responded to several thefts where the goal was over 3k. And this was in 2016-17. On countless occasions the person committing the theft admitted to stealing due to lack of consequences. Most would be on their way home before the incident report was completed. What people fail to realize is, this is whats caught and/or reported, and only accounts for a small percentage of the thefts. I'm not going to say black people are to blame, but the majority of the customers are black. Theft was so bad at both locations they hired cops to work off duty. Between thefts with little to no consequence(thanks Kim Fox) and multiple shootings, who could blame them for leaving. The store was less than 10 minutes away from me and I would go to another location.

In Va....they closed one 7/11 after another as the thief got higher. Typically in black areas, on a corner, they would park on the side, walk in grab a case of beer, or the inhalers were big items for a while. The inhalers, they take to another 7/11 and return it, for $11. back in the day. Irony was black managers, or clerks, were also ripping them of or boy friend / girl friends etc. They would turn away as their " partner " came in ripped off items. We had a one group on a Sunday, drove up one of the main roads, 20 mile street, they stopped at each 7/11 and stole items. Beer, wine, cigarettes'( cartons ) anything which they could easily sell. Fools made a stupid mistake, got to the end, came down the other side doing the same. Cops were a few blocks away writing a report, when they hit the store opposite side of the highway ...so of course, the cops saw them drive right by them....off to jail they went, trunk was loaded down with stolen items.

Wal Mart doesn't make that much per item. That's why the prices are so low. They make it up on volume. That's their business model. It doesn't matter that the store looks "full". You don't need to steal a lot from any one store to make it lose money. That 17 cents they just made on that 6-pack of tube socks gets erased pretty quick when you toss a big screen in a cart and haul ass out the front door. Then you gotta sell a lot of stuff just to make up for that T.V. But every day more stuff just walks out the door. It doesn't take long for a sore to go into the red. Then the managers have to start cutting people's hours back, they start carrying less inventory. Everything with an y decent resale value has to get locked up. That's a pain in the ass for the regular customers and they go someplace else. No one wants to wait 10 minutes just for someone to show up to unlock a package of razor blades.

Mobile customers can travel to Walmarts further away, plus these customers are much less likely to steal. This is also part of the calculation in closing stores.

Who I feel bad for is the innocent people there. They're pointing all the blame at Walmart. Really it should be the politicians allowing this stuff to happen in the community. If they were tougher on crime and would keep these people behind bars doing this stuff especially when they have a novel as a wrap sheet. They don't need to be out with the regular population at some point they have to become a menace to society. You'll be amazed if you get the bad people out of the community. The good innocent people can thrive

Wal Mart is a business. They do not consider anything other than profit, as a business should. Even when they support humanitarian causes or improve employee benefits, I guarantee they see a profit in every dollar they allocate for those causes, wether it be happier employees producing more, or good publicity improving foot traffic, every dollar they spend they expect some sort of positive return. So when a store consistently loses money because it’s location suffers from extreme theft, or property damage, guess what they do? Guess what ANY BUSINESS does, they close. Period

Perfect example of a point that always gets disregarded, poverty doesn’t cause crime, crime causes poverty. All the goonz and thieves chased out the biggest job creator around, forcing folks to have to travel or pay higher prices to get the same goods. The entrepreneurs and business owners dont want to operate let alone live in communities where thugs kill each other over parking spots for their stolen cars. Absolutely hurts the community and Making the entire community lose out. Sad.

It’s a for profit business which allows it to grow and expand into more areas. It’s not a non profit operation or a charity. She was exactly right. If the community doesn’t respect and protect its resources it will lose those resources. Ultimately hurting the very community that aided in its fall. We all gotta take a long look in the mirror and decide what kind of person we want to be, and then take accountability for those choices.

It's not just Chicago. Here in Portland Wal-mart closed 2 stores. It was crazy shopping at the one closest to me; security officers in the store and still the theft was so high they closed. The same is going on at Target. When I go in there are at least 2 security officers on the premises. The frickin' toothpaste is locked up and you have to get a store employee to open the case. Seriously? How long before that closes? Another resource gone. What is especially painful for the locals is these are the places they get their prescriptions filled. You can't order that shit online. So they have to use a day off work to travel far from their neighborhood to fill it instead of spending it with the family. And a lot of these people don't have cars so it's public transportation, an extra cost and even more time consuming. And if they can't fill it their health deteriorates or is life-threatening. There is a cascading effect to these closures, loss of jobs, etc.
