I'm surprised this movie didn't expand on the new kind of slavery that followed almost immediately after the Civil War. Convict Leasing lasted from 1871 right up until 1942 and was done almost exclusively by each and every southern state and border state. It could be argued that that slavery wasn't abolished, it just changed it's shape and rules.
@josecarranza7555

What's that?
@IronDragon-2143
6 жыл бұрын
Michael Carranza It's when you force convicts into hard manual labor. You see, many people like to say that slavery is illegal in the United States but that's not entirely true. There's a loophole in the 13th Amendment that permits the use of forced labor on criminals and convicts. So from the 1870s to the 1940s, the southern states found a way to work around the system and use blacks as slave labor right up until WWII. All they had to do was call it convict leasing, shape laws that exclusively effect blacks and next thing you know 2 to 3 million blacks are clapped back in irons and used for slave labor once again. If you don't believe me, just bear in mind that recently the Governor of Massachusetts offered every convict in his state to President Trump to be used as a free labor force to build the southern border wall. Slavery isn't entirely illegal in the United States, it's just obsolete.

Reconstruction was a horrible time in American history, a brutal time that is often forgotten. Men say, "Get over slavery," but it didn't end there. The oppression was systematic, fearful, and extensive. The thought of a grow man being called "boy," being terrorized not to vote, and otherwise harassed because of his ethnicity shows the utter depravity of man. Why be so fearful of a person that you think is inherently inadequate? This was also practiced by Christians, so called, and some who know the gospel still sided with this horrendous treatment by their silence and laughter. I don't like everything going on today, but to look back upon America's past with rose colored glasses is another fallacy.

Excuse me black Americans can vote any political party they want just like white Americans and other minorities. Why is it that black people are always lectured by some white people for everything, like seriously we can think for ourselves. The Republican Party would use bigoted dog whistles code words like; forced bussing, law & order, state rights, tough on crime, voting rights & welfare cuts. I mean seriously how stupid do we think we are and don’t think for a second I would ever support the Democratic Party because they would pander to you so they could beat their opponent to be elected in power. The Democrats are like foxes and the Republicans are like wolves both want power, but they use different methods of their own bigotry. So screw both political parties because they are garbage. I as a proud black man can think for myself and vote anyone I want based on my own interest, so to anyone that has a problem with it shut your mouth & mind your own business.

Because I see comments of people confusing the Democrats and Republicans of today vs back then - here’s the truth about the party switch: It’s hard to accept but there was absolutely a party switch. -The Democrat confederates often described the confederacy as a conservative movement. -The Radical Republicans, that represented the most ardent abolitionists were for that time radical leftist, representing the most extreme of their party. -While moderate Republicans were described (by themselves) as the conservative faction. -The party switch came around the civil rights movement, but was much more gradual, as republicans (who made up of rich industrialists) became less idealist and more opportunistic,found they could start winning the South if they opposed some of the civil rights measures. -Conversely, Northern Democrats started trying to win black voters after the great migration, and took up the cause of civil rights (think Kennedy, Johnson)u

Finally, I’m white, and I have a college major in politics, if you were wondering.
@williamjeffries5074

I’ll admit, the two party system hasn’t worked out well for many African Americans. There have been saints and sinners amongst both parties, and parties have changed. When the democrats passed the new deal, it helped a lot of white and black people, enough so that some blacks began affiliating with democrats, and the switch was completed with the signature of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act by Democratic President Lyndon Johnson. At the same time, the Republicans started playing footsie with Southern white bigots in order to gain electoral clout there, and eventually, the racists they invited took over the party. The rest is history. And finally, since the welfare state, throughout much of its existence, benefited mostly white people, does that make white people slaves to your supposed Democratic plantation? White people use welfare too, you know.
