It’s easy to mistake the squawking “kwok” of this week’s Bird of the Week for a Common Raven. This sound-alike call likely inspired our Bird of the Week’s scientific name, Nycticorax nycticorax, which means “night raven.” ♥️ 🐦⬛
Although the Black-crowned Night Heron remains fairly common throughout its wide range, it faces an ever-growing list of threats. One significant problem is plastic trash pollution along shorelines. Black-crowned Night Herons often mistake plastic trash for food, with fatal results.
🚮SPLASh works to reduce this threat to Black-crowned Night Herons and all other wildlife by conducting community cleanups and by raising awareness through education and outreach programs.
